Lake Michigan can be very deceiving in that it's calm and placid looking much of the time, but can turn nasty very, very quickly. 4-6 foot waves aren't too terrible, but I'd guess the boat got hit with some bigger ones and combined with very strong wind gusts, caused it to turn over. Very sad for the two who didn't make it and their families.

This is a tragic reminder of how fast the weather can turn near the Manitou and Fox Islands. Even with the best equipment and technology and the foreknowledge of an impending storm

So awful. I really question the water temperature reported here. The map at: http://www.coastwatch.msu.edu/michigan/m1.html shows much colder water temps, but I could be wrong. 70 degree water sounds more like southern Mich water. Regardless so very sad.

There were reports yesterday that even Ironwood had temperatures in the nineties; makes me wonder if even Lake Superior water became unusually warm.

Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea!
