Ann Arbor resident says fraternity's hazing put him in the hospital for 12 days

By Cindy Heflin

Ann Arbor resident Eric Walker, a former student at Wayne State University in Detroit, says he was beaten so severely as part of his fraternity initiation that he suffered kidney failure and a lengthy hospitalization, The Detroit News reports.

The Wayne State chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity has been suspended and could have its charter revoked, the article said.

Walker told The News he had to go for 32 days to a house in Detroit where fraternity members beat him. The worst beating happened March 1, the article said, "when allegedly dozens of fraternity members from across Michigan assaulted him. Walker said he also was forced to eat dog food."

Walker's mother told the newspaper doctors said her son might not recover.

Kappa Alpha Psi is a prestigious, African-American based fraternity whose members include Michigan Congressman John Conyers, talk show host Tavis Smiley and film director John Singleton, the article said.

Richard Lee Snow, the executive director of the Philadelphia-based fraternity, said it does not condone hazing.

"That sounds like a gang initiation not a hazing that is so sad." Agreed. I'm totally down with some low grade old school hazing where you gotta drink and puke all over yourself and general things that are going to happen during college anyway. But as soon as you're being "jumped in" to a frat, that's way too far.

prestigious? after that? unfortunately there are stories like this. why would you want to join a group that does this to you? i joined a fraternity in college. i still considery myself part of them. i NEVER went through that stuff, nor would i accept it today. peer pressures are high, but not above self esteem.

The national president says they do not condone hazing. What do you expect them to say? They have participated in quite a few themselves.

This is one reason i did not pledge! I cannot accept someone with a low self esteem beating me and when the pledge period is all over having to listen to the man call me brother. This is a common practice. They along with other Greeks as they call themselves do much worse to pledgees. I do not want to be apart of anything that bad. If i was not good enough then so be it. I was not stupid!

Sadly, this kind of story is not surprising to me.

It's sad to see that these young people have such a need to belong that they would subject themselves to this type of degradation. When I was in college, my best friend tried to join one of these fraternities. He was war veteran and during the hazing period this man had 19 year old beating and jumping on him. I could never understand how the African American community can get so geeked up about these fraternities and sororities because none of them make any kind of significant contribution to the African American community. It's like watching a bunch of grown men and women act like little kids. I hope Eric is successful with his lawsuit. Maybe this will send a message to these thugs that beating people is not an acceptable way of making them belong.

Some frats "brand" their members; if you see scars in the shape of a Greek letter on the arm of a fellow, that's probably why. Ask frat members why they do these things and they tend to get quite angry with you. At least that's been my experience.

"Forced" to eat dog food? Beat downs? I don't understand, hasn't hazing been illegal across the country since at least my college days over 2 decades ago? Why do we still see these every so often. Is it because we don't teach kids to use their brains and logic? If you are in danger of being hazed, YOU have the power to report the hazors to the authorities, college admininistration and/or Fraternal adminisstration.

That sounds like a gang initiation not a hazing that is so sad. I never understood why anyone would want to go through all that in the first place.

That is horrible. Why would someone go BACK after being beat once? It is terrible he felt he had to eat dog food at least it wasn't something worse. I hope everyone involved is prosecuted.
