Ann Arbor Senior Center wins 'Bid With Your Lid,' receives $15K
Thanks to local residents who voted in the Stonyfield Farms "Bid With Your Lid" program, the Ann Arbor Senior Center has received a $15,000 donation.
The program, which ran from Aug. 1 to Oct. 1, allowed residents to vote at participating Ann Arbor grocery stores for one of three Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation entities: Mack Indoor Pool, the Ann Arbor Senior Center or the Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund.
It was a close race. Overall, 346 votes were cast — 126 for the senior center, 111 for the pool and 109 for the scholarship fund, said Jeff Straw, deputy manager for parks and recreation services.
Straw says the donation, which the parks and recreation department has received on behalf of the senior center, will "go a long way" for the senior center, which was in danger of closing due to budget shortfalls. The money will help fund the programs and services the senior center offers, he said.
Straw said the center was in danger of closing in July, but a task force was able to make recommendations to shrink the deficit and keep it open.
"We were excited about the partnership (with Stonyfield Farms), and I think the program went really well," Straw said.
