Ann Arbor's Community High School receives more than 400 lottery applications, results will be announced Friday

By Kyle Feldscher

Ann Arbor Public Schools officials are close to announcing who will attend Community High School next year.

District spokesperson Liz Margolis said AAPS received 408 applications for 114 spots entering CHS for the class of 2015. Community High School officials will know how many students accepted spots on Friday, which has been dubbed Commit to Community Day.

If a student or family declines a spot in the school, the district will move on to the next name on the list.

Applications were due Feb. 11 and the selection was conducted Feb. 16.

Skyline High School is also in the process of determining which students will be awarded spots in its class of 2015 lottery.

Margolis said the school received 136 applicants for 100 spots in the class of 2015. Students selected for spots can confirm their plans to attend the school Tuesday.

It's high time that AAPS opened a second "Community High" option. Year after year since its founding, Community High has attracted far more student applicants than can be accepted in its small-school, personal, innovative program. The same is true for Ann Arbor Open School at Mack. These alternative schools show the way for the district to adopt the most effective, interesting, student-centered learning facilities where teachers are super-knowledgable guides and coaches and students minds are engaged as they become active seekers and learners. In-district alternatives are found around the US --overall--to be more effective than charter schools that pick and choose their student bodies and have no mandate to serve all those who live in a district. We need to keep public oversight of public education and can best do so if we offer more in-district options.

Skyline has lottery spots also?? I thought the high school you went to was determined by geographic location within the district boundaries (aside from Community, of course).

That's funny; I thought I was clicking to see *news* about Community, because the lotto results got posted and the 'winners' already know who they are, the people who might get lucky if some folks don't take spots will get their phone calls in the next couple days, and the 'losers' already know who they are too... The big "news" day is the numbers-posting day and that was almost two weeks ago! Wonder why they got 20% or so more lotto participants this year than last--did they do more recruiting of out-of-AAPS students for their drawing?
