Arbucks? Tree Town Tokens? What could we call Ann Arbor's local currency?
Do we need some Tree Town Tokens? How about some Arbucks? Or maybe some A2$? The Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority is considering creating a local currency to promote shopping close to home.
Think Local First, a Washtenaw County-based association of more than 200 independent businesses, will conduct the study and report to the DDA board early next year.
While the DDA studies the feasibility of such an idea, we'd like to hear your suggestions about what our substitute greenbacks might be called. Flood us with ideas, and we promise to do our best to turn them into a completely unscientific poll and report the results.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started. Tell us whether you like these or come up with your own.
- Downtown Dough
- A2 Dollars
- Arbucks
- Tree Town Tokens
- A2 Bucks

How about a coin with obama's likeness. We'll call it the "Loser".

Before acting on this idea the DDA woud do well to visit the E.F. Schumacher Society's Web page concerning local currencies: www.smallisbeautiful.org/local_currencies.html

How would this be different from Ann Arbor Gold, a program that was once available through the visitors and convention bureau? I thought that died due to lack of interest/use?

Well if we can get Think Local First to engage a local bank to distribute/exchange scrip and get their members to accept the currency, perhaps Ann Arbor First is a thought...
