Arrest made after woman claims she was sexually assaulted at U-M's Mott Children's Hospital

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Editor's note: This article has been updated to reflect the fact that police now say the suspect is 17.

A 17-year-old was arrested Wednesday after a female patient claimed to have been sexually assaulted last month at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.

University police spokeswoman Diane Brown said the victim is older than 16.

The incident was said to have occurred inside the patient's room Aug. 20 but was reported to police Sept. 20, Brown said Thursday. According to incident logs, the suspect was visiting another patient.

The 17-year-old, a visitor to the hospital, was arrested Wednesday, and he is expected to be charged Friday.

Brown said she did not believe the suspect, who does not have a permanent address, knew the victim.

So many here seem to be sure this young man is guilty. Or that a crime has been committed. Hold your horses before you join the lynching mob.

AnnArbor.com, I am really unimpressed with this headline. "Claims" is a very prejudicial word choice, don't you think? How about "Arrest made after woman reports sexual assault at Mott Children's Hospital"? Come on now.

The wagons are circling around themselves as this is open to a bunch of law suits. Don't expect anymore then offical responses to questions. Patient raped by a stranger in a hospital? I think a number of attorneys would be happy to file a law suit, that by the way, doesn't mean they are happy about what happened.

The local news said that he was visiting another patient at Mott. Gosh even Boy Scouts and church choir groups mandate the not leaving kids alone with adults. This is unbelievable that better safety measures are not in place to protect sick children. SHAME ON YOU MOTT HOSPITAL!

The victim is described as a "woman" and the suspect "a 17 year old boy" so are you trying to be cute?

So, you expect them to follow every person in there around?

Why wasn't the crime reported for a month? There is more to this story. Hopefully AA.com does some actual work on this one.

Why did it take a whole month for them to arrest them. Any man who sexually abuses a HOSPITAL patient has serious problems.

It says it took a month to be reported to police, who then apparently made an arrest in less than 10 days.
