At least 9 catalytic converters stolen in Pittsfield Township

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Pittsfield Township police say a rash of catalytic converter thefts that started again in early August intensified last week.

Police took at least nine reports of catalytic converter thefts last week, primarily in the Glencoe Hills apartment complex.

On Aug. 10, six people who had cars parked in the 2100 block of Glencoe Hills Drive reported their catalytic converters were stolen. The vehicles involved were a 2000 Chevy Cavalier, 1994 Mercury Villager, 1996 Chevy Corsica, 1994 Chevy Cavalier, 1999 Chevy Cavalier, and a 2000 Chevy Malibu.

Another catalytic converter theft was reported in the same block the next day, involving a 1995 Chevy Corsica. And on Aug. 12, two more catalytic converter thefts were reported - one taken from a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am in the 2400 block of Twin Lakes Drive and one from a 1998 Jeep Cherokee in the 4900 block of Lake Ridge Drive.

Officials say replacing a catalytic converter can cost about $1,000. In addition, vehicles are sometimes damaged when the catalytic converter is taken.

The catalytic converter is used to convert harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions before they leave the exhaust system. It's located in the car's exhaust system, and precious metals such as platinum, palladium, rhodium or gold are used as the catalyst. Police say thieves sell the converters to metal recyclers, who then extract the metal and resell it.

@d_a2 Maybe I'm not reading the same article you want to point out. It says that not only did they find 4 pounds of marijuana, but also two hand guns. Now they can't be usd to hurt anybody. I think that is a good thing. But you're right PTPD shouldn't waste their time with that.

maybe if Pittsfield PD wasn't busy pulling people over then subsequently getting search warrants for that persons house only to recover what looked like barely 4 pounds of crappy marijuana (see story in Ypsi earlier this week) they could concentrate on crime like this that's actually effecting the citizens of their "township"

I frequently replace converters for under $300. A thousand dollar converter would be a bit out of the ordinary.
