AT&T wireless problems affecting calls in Ann Arbor

By Ben Freed

Update 11:15 a.m.: Statement from AT&T spokesman Jermaine Spight: “AT&T customers in Metro Detroit, and those located in Monroe, Washtenaw, Genesee, Livingston, St. Clair, Lapeer counties, may have experienced temporary loss of wireless service earlier today. The issue, which did not affect texting or data services, has been resolved and calls are processing normally. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.” Spight said crews are still working to determine the cause of the outage.

Update at 10:45: AT&T wireless cellphones were working in the AnnArbor.com newsroom at 10:45 a.m. We are still awaiting comment from AT&T spokespeople as to the cause of the outage. Let us know in the comments section if your service has returned.

Ann Arbor area AT&T customers are experiencing a service disruption Monday morning and are unable to make or receive phone calls.

The outage, initially reported by WXYZ, appears to only be affecting phone calls. Data services and text messaging appear to be functioning properly. The outage extends throughout the metro-Detroit region.

This post will be updated when further information is available from AT&T regarding the cause of the outage and timing of return of service.

We just finished our trek across the Ural Mountains and we did not have any phone service the whole time. It was very scary because what if we had an emergency?? Fortunately we had the game Apples to Apples that we played during our voyage-- this kept our minds busy so that we didn't have to focus on our phone not working. It was a real eye opener for us. Whether your are in Northern Russia or SE Michigan always keep a board game on hand so that if you loose cell service you can always bring it out. We are going to be heading south and plan on rowing across the Caspian Sea next week. Pray to god that the phone service doesn't go out again.

Had no service around 8am today, could not make calls. I got a new phone yesterday so I thought it was an issue with the new phone. All seems to be fine now.

Good reason to stick with Verizon. Never have problems.

That is actually completely untrue -- Verizon has had more outages like this than ATT, T-Mobile and Sprint combined. I've been with ATT for about 15 years now, and this is the first outage (an entire hour and a half) that ATT has ever had for cell service.

Anyone else out there not able to make phone calls? I have AT&T and called customer support. They told me there was currently no estimated time for return of service.
