Aunt Millie's to donate 2,400 bread loaves, FireKeepers Casino to donate 200 turkeys to area food banks

By Heather Lockwood

In light of the upcoming holiday season, Aunt Millie's and FireKeepers Casino have pledged to donate bread and frozen turkeys to Ann Arbor area food banks.

And lots of it.

Aunt Millie's has said it will donate 2,400 loaves of bread to Ann Arbor's Food Gatherers Food Bank today.

The butter top wheat bread — with a retail value of $7,656 — is to be delivered to the food bank, 1 Carrot Way, at 10 a.m., for distribution to those in need.

And FireKeepers Casino has said it will donate and deliver 200 frozen turkeys to three different Michigan food banks Monday, including Food Gatherers in Ann Arbor.

"Between the tight economy and the upcoming holidays, this a very busy season for us," Eileen Spring, Food Gatherers Food Bank president and CEO, said in an Aunt Millie's news release. "This generous donation by Aunt Millie's helps us provide for those in need during this crucial time."

The company plans to donate 60,816 loaves of bread to food banks throughout the Midwest this holiday season, according to the release.

Since 1988, the Food Gatherers has distributed more than 39 million pounds of food throughout Washtenaw County, where nearly 5,570 individuals receive assistance from the food bank's network partners each week.

Thank you all at Food Gatherings for the marvelous work you do. A big thanks to Aunt Millies and Firekeepers whose donations will be a big help. Maybe we all can become bigger helpers.
