Balance of power likely to shift to Republicans in U.S. House; voter turnout doesn't appear to be heavy

By Stefanie Murray

The balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives is likely to shift to the Republicans when the votes from today's elections are tallied, according to reports from The New York Times and The Washington Post.

The nation will be carefully watching what happens in Indiana, where the polls closed at 6 p.m. The outcome of several contested seats in that state could be a sign of what's to come across the rest of the country.

Voter turnout was reported to be modest earlier today in Washtenaw County. In metro Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reported voter turnout was about 50 percent in Novi, and a precinct chairman in Ferndale reported it was the busiest he's seen since the last presidential election. In Gross Pointe, a turnout is expected to be around 35 percent to 42 percent, the Detroit News reported.

In the Lansing area, a "fair" turnout was reported with no issues, according to the Lansing State Journal.

Locally, the Ann Arbor Chronicle spent the day visiting various polling places around the Ann Arbor area and filed several short reports.

Looks like the chances are virtually nil now for a GOP senate: GOP Senate chances

Uh, the latest projections I saw in the last few hours project that the GOP will fail to get a majority in the Senate - at least that is what fivetwentyeight's story says, as detailed on the NYT's website.

"Reported to be modest" by annarbor.com earlier today. Journalists citing themselves as sources--a new low in reporting.

@michigan face: What's your problem with the article? AA.com isn't "downplaying the Democrats". They're just reporting what's happening on a national scale. How did you twist that into some sort of subversive intent to get local Democrats to not show up at the polls? Please quit looking for ill-intentions where they don't exist.

What's new A2.com - Downplay the Democrats and make them feel as though it is all over - so maybe they should just stay home and forget about it. Your opinions are so consistently biased. We may need to start calling you FoxyAnnArbor.com.
