Candlelight vigil to be held tonight for University of Michigan students killed in car crash

By David Jesse

University of Michigan students will gather on the Diag at 8 p.m. tonight to hold a candlelight vigil for two students killed in a car crash last weekend.

Zhangqin Xie, 22, a graduate student in electrical engineering, and Ran Xu, 22, a graduate student in educational studies, both students from China, were killed in the crash in Arenac County.

Xu was driving the vehicle, and Xie was the front-seat passenger.

The three other passengers in the vehicle were injured: Chang Gong, a 23-year-old U-M graduate student; his girlfriend Wenting Cheng, a 22-year-old U-M graduate student; and Michigan State University graduate student Linling Cai, 22.

The cause of that crash remains under investigation. Police said the students were on a trip to see fall colors.
