Car strikes, kills truck driver in York Township

By Cindy Heflin

A 45-year-old Macomb Township man was killed today when he was hit by a car after loading equipment onto his semi truck in York Township.

The man was struck about 3:25 p.m. by a 1999 Ford Taurus traveling west on Stony Creek Road east of Sanford Road, a press release from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said. He had just loaded equipment onto a flatbed semi parked along the road, the press release said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Huron Valley Ambulance workers, the press release said.

The driver of the car, a 50-year-old Clinton Township man, was evaluated by Huron Valley Ambulance personnel and released.

Stony Creek Road was closed for several hours after the crash.

Sheriff's department spokesman Derrick Jackson said he did not have any information about what might have caused the accident or what direction the car was traveling when it struck the truck driver.

Friday the day of the accident was a terrible day for all who knew this 45 yr old man. He left behind children who have to finish raising themselves. Please people when you read this article learn something from it. I f u see a vehicle on the side of the road pay attention to make sure the driver isn't on the side of the road as well and remember if you are on a highway and can move over to the next lane please do so or at very least slow down until you know it is all clear.

@KJMClark, Must agree 100%. Now that the weather has warmed, I am taking my 2 year old son for a 4 mile walk down "dirt/gravel " roads every day that it is not raining. I am amazed at the number of cars that do not slow down even though I walk against traffic and pull off to the very most side of the roadway. The "ludricous" posted speed limits on dirt roads is 55 mph which sends rocks and dirt flying in all directions towards myself and my son in his stroller. While I dislike the dirt roads , it beats the road I live on "Platt Road" with posted speeds of 55 mph , most of that traffic moves at 65 mph. In my humble opinion, most people driving cars are just plain rude folks and it is very sad ! Good Day

Another pointless tragedy. If you see something out of the ordinary on the side of the road, slow down. If nothing else, taking your foot off the gas and covering the brake will give you a few seconds to react. Don't know what happened here, maybe the other guy still wouldn't have stopped in time, but maybe the truck driver wouldn't be dead today. Slightly unrelated note, why are the tags for this story "Nanomechanical Engineering and Science Center, University of Michigan, nanotechnology, crash"?

I am a truck driver and I find this sad. I know that it is very dangerous for us to be out of our truck along any roadway, it strikes a little harder when you see it happen so close to home. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the truck driver. As for the driver that hit and killed him, I truly hope they do a full investigation to make sure he wasn't under the influence of anything, and to find out if it was carelessness or not.

I am a salesperson for a nationwide LTL trucking company. I know how dangerous it is to be a driver in this industry and I value and honor those that undertake this calling. I am very sorry for his loss of life and for his family who will suffer his loss. It ain't only cops and firemen who die in the line of duty. Wishing the best for the loved ones of this individual.
