By Lee Higgins
Catalytic converters were reported stolen Thursday from three vehicles at Weatherstone Condominiums, a Pittsfield Township police news release said.
Police responded at about 5:55 a.m. Thursday to the 1600 block of Weatherstone Drive to investigate, the release said.
Two catalytic converter thefts have also been reported from vehicles this week on the University of Michigan campus.
One was reported in the 2200 block of Cram Place and the other in Lot NW-10 at 2153 Hubbard between Monday and Wednesday, according to the campus police crime log.

"For all the work involved, you would think it would be easier to get a job." Well, if there were any jobs available out there... It might help people to know where these thefts happen. As in, vehicle parked in the street, public parking lot, private driveway, etc. The UM reports seem to have just started in the past week, and involve vehicles parked in lots that are hit overnight.

In 2008, someone choppped off my catalytic converter in Pittsfeild Township. The police told me that the converter only catches about $50 at any local junk yard. However when I went to purchase a new part, the part was over $500. Thankfully I had car insurance that covered the majority of it but I was out of a vehicle for a few days. I feel sorry for anyone who is a victim of catalytic converter theft, especially for those without insurance.

@EyeHeartA2...Platinum was at $1,531.00 an oz and Rhodium [over double that of gold] at $2,530.00...but thieves will be thieves and those converters will swap for one mess load of crack....

@localresident, yes they do get nice $$. the money is in the metal (or honeycomb) inside which is platinum, palladium and/or rhodium (although small amounts)

Do these fetch a high resale value? I was unaware that these are hot items to be stolen on cars. I'm reminded of when everyone was going around stealing airbags and Lexus/Jaguar/Mercedes (for the most part) headlights. Interesting..
