Chelsea High School Top Scholars

Chelsea High School will hold its 2013 graduation ceremonies 2 p.m. Sunday in the gymnasium (Doors open to public at 1 p.m.). The class has 237 graduates. (230 for CHS and 7 from ECA and WAY programs)

Kennedy Aldrich
Parents: Courtney and Dan Aldrich
Activities and Awards: Kennedy is a member of the Chelsea House Orchestra, Company C Show Choir, and Chelsea High School Jazz Band. She takes private lessons for violin, piano, and voice, and she is a member of a string quartet. For violin, she has been a member of the All-State Orchestra four times and the MYAF Honors Orchestra twice. She also teaches violin to four students. She has been a member of 4-H for seven years, showing llamas, goats, pigs, feeder calves, and still exhibits. She also shows animals at the Chelsea Community Fair and was the Chelsea fair queen in 2010. Kennedy was on the varsity Cross Country team for four years and was named Captain in her senior year. She earned her varsity letter all four years, in addition to receiving the Most Improved award Junior year and the Sportsmanship award senior year. She also participated in Track and Field her freshman and sophomore years. Kennedy is very involved in her church and is a member of four different music ensembles as well as the youth group. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received class awards in Orchestra, French, and English. Kennedy has received multiple scholarships from GVSU, including a music scholarship, an Honors College scholarship and the Presidential scholarship. She is a National Merit Finalist.
Plans After Graduation: Attending Grand Valley State University for biomedical sciences with a preveterinary emphasis, along with a minor in violin.

Jordan Battaglia
Parents: Robert and Stacie Battaglia
Activities and Awards: Jordan is a National Merit Commendation Scholar, and AP Honor student at Chelsea High School. Jordan is her Senior Class Secretary and 3 year member of the CHS Student Council. In addition she is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a Link Crew Leader for 2 years. Jordan is also a 4 year member of the high school’s show choir, Company C. and a member of the Chelsea High School Chamber Choir. Outside of school, Jordan is a Youth Leader for St. Mary Youth Group, Teen Leader for the Lansing Diocese Leadership Camp, and member of the St. Mary Contemporary Choir. Jordan is the recipient of the DePaul University Presidential Academic Scholarship.
Plans After Graduation: Attending DePaul University in Chicago to study either Education or English.

Niko Coffman
Parents: Chuck and Tammy Coffman
Activities and Awards: Niko is an active member in the National Honor Society at CHS. A recipient of academic scholarships from various universities within the state of Michigan and are as follows: Ferris State University, President’s Scholarship; Western Michigan University, Excellence Scholarship; Northern Michigan University, Kaye Scholarship, Merit Award, Excellence Award. During high school Niko was not a part of any school sports due to involvement in AAA hockey. Over the course of the high school career Niko has played for the Victory Honda and Little Caesars organizations, ending the high school years playing for the Little Caesars Midget Major program. During this past year Niko was an assistant captain on the team and had a mostly successful year ending a little short losing in the state tournament before the national tournament.
Plans After Graduation: Niko intends on taking a year off of school to pursue hockey aspirations, the goal being a full scholarship to a major D1 college in the future. To do this, Niko has deferred the scholarships received for one year. Once college begins, wherever it may be, Niko plans to study Pre-med.

Lindsey Hopkins
Parents: Ken and Patty Hopkins
Activities and Awards: Lindsey was the group coordinator of the National Honors Society. She ran cross county for two years. She has received various academic honors through her high school career. She will graduate Summa Cum Laude.
Plans After Graduation: Lindsey will being majoring in genetics, will attend either Washtenaw Community College or Spring Arbor College.

Rachel Katz
Parents: Debra Grysen and Mark Katz
Activities and Awards: Rachel was a member of the National Honor Society. She was on the SEC All-Academic Team. She was a three year varsity tennis player. Rachel was on the bowling team her junior year and the volleyball team her freshman year. Additionally, she volunteers at Salvation Army.
Plans After Graduation: Attend the University of Michigan to study engineering.

Gabrielle Lantis
Parents: Eric and Raquel Lantis
Activities and Awards: Gabrielle was a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She attended the National Student Leadership Conference her junior year, received the SEC All-Academic Award, and received her Academic Letter Award all three years. Gabrielle also received the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship and Channel Seven’s Brightest and the Best Award. She was on the varsity soccer team and played in the symphony orchestra.
Plans After Graduation: Gabrielle will be attending the University of Michigan, majoring in pre-medicine.

Shane L. McGrath
Parents: Brian McGrath (deceased) and Dana Geiser McGrath
Activities and Awards: Shane is a member of the National Honors Society. Shane was a four-year member of the CHS Varsity Track and Field team and in his freshman and sophomore year he was a member of the CHS Cross Country team. He participated in the Economics Challenge State Finals and the Physics Olympics during his senior year. In addition to the competitions during his senior year, Shane participated in Science Olympiad freshman and sophomore year. In his community, Shane has been an active member in Boy Scouting.
Plans After Graduation: Shane will be attending Michigan Technological University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

Nathan Miller
Parents: Von and Jenny Miller
Activities and Awards: Nate was a three-year varsity wrestler and team captain his senior year. Summa Cum Laude graduate. SEC All-Academic.
Plans After Graduation: Attend Northern Michigan University, major in illustration.

Zachary Michael Ousley
Parents: Todd and Kathleen Ousley
Activities and Awards: Zach was a four-year member of the men’s varsity swim/dive team and was selected to be a captain his senior year. He has also taught swim lessons for the past three years. Zach was an AP Scholar and a recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award. He was also involved in Link Crew and was an active volunteer at his church.
Plans After Graduation: Zach will be attending the University of Michigan, studying pre-medicine.

Katherine Paulsen
Parents: Peter and Gina Paulsen
Activities and Awards: Member of the National Honor society; Link Crew; 3 year member of the varsity volleyball team; 2x team captain of travel volleyball team. Recipient of the All-Academic award; Individual Academic award (volleyball); will graduate summa cum laude.
Plans After Graduation: Undecided.

Nick Wilson
Parents: Tim and Ruth Wilson
Activities and Awards: Nick has been an avid clarinetist during his high school years. He was two-time principal chair of the University of Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra and was a four-time member of the Michigan All-State Band. Nick was also nominated to the 2012 and 2013 Michigan Youth Arts festival as well as being named an MSBOA outstanding soloist both years. In addition to music, Nick has earned an Academic letter all four years of high school and was selected to the SEC All-Academic Team.
Plans After Graduation: Nick will be attending the University of Michigan on a merit scholarship and majoring in Clarinet Performance.

Carley Wooster
Parents: Scott and Casey Wooster
Activities and Awards: Carley was a member of the National Honor Society, serving as co-chair of the High School blood drive, as well as a member of the Yearbook staff. Carley was a member of the Chelsea Varsity softball team, earning her Varsity letter, sophomore year and played travel softball for 7 years. She also earned her Academic letter consecutively for 4 years and regularly teaches Sunday school at the Chelsea First United Methodist Church while assisting with various other volunteer projects within the church.
Plans After Graduation: Carley is undecided where she will be attending college in the fall, but plans to pursue a degree in special education.
