Chelsea City Council gives final approval to rezoning for new police station

By Alana West

The Chelsea City Council took the final step Tuesday to rezone two city lots for a new police station.

The council approved the second reading of an ordinance that would rezone two city lots — one on the northeast corner of East Summit and Main streets and zoned O-1 (for office use) and the other east of the City Hall parking lot on Orchard Street, and zoned RS-3 (for two-family residential use).

They have been combined into a larger parcel where the new police station is to be built beginning in 2011.

The police station will replace the current station at 104 E. Middle St. Council member Rod Anderson was the only member to vote against the rezoning.

The Planning Commission had recommended against rezoning.
