Chelsea Council sets public hearing for Chelsea Milling Company tax abatement

By Lisa Allmendinger

Following the construction of new concrete storage silos, Chelsea Milling Company, which produces Jiffy Mix, is requesting an 11-year tax abatement of about $3.1 million for building improvements and about $857,000 for new machinery.

The company, at 201 W. North St. in Chelsea’s downtown, added six new silos for wheat storage as well as a wheat-cleaning station. The project allows for 300,000 bushels of wheat storage in concrete silos to the west of the current silos according to the general description of the project.

No new hires are expected as a result of the plant improvements. With 314 employees, the company is one of the larger employers in the city.

Previously, the company was approved for tax abatements of $47,229 in 1990, $4.475 million in 1995 and $5.734 million in 2009.

The Chelsea City Council unanimously approved a public hearing date of May 24 for the request.

The approval of an industrial facilities tax abatement is a process that includes a public hearing by the City Council, approval by the council and subsequent review and approval by the State Tax Commission.

Tax abatements for a privately owned company? Who makes the money off this?

Not from around here

You want to know why Chelsea has been awarded the best small town library in America? Look no further than people like the the Holmes and Bob Daniels and Family, owner of Chelsea Lumber. They are companies that give back! (Also I think Bob's son Jeff has some little sideline job out west that helps him donate too)

Well, everyone in town. The Holmes family has provided this town with employment on a grand scale for hundreds of years, plus whatever help we give them they return in ten fold by community donations, free tours and hundred of other charitable contributions that go un noticed. Rather than move jobs out of state or out of country, Chelsea Milling has keep its work force local. Even there boxes are made in Marshal instead of China! Every parade in the area the Jiffy trucks turn out and hand out free boxes of mix. Last year between two Fourth of July parades in Chelsea and Grass Lake my two kids, 2nd grade and pre school collected 18 boxes of free muffin mix! The Holmes are a example of doing things right. Heck, the line of people trying to get a job there is so long I've been waiting 3 years! They treat there employees and there town right. Not all companies are evil old timer. If you want to espouse that noise pollution drive 20 minutes east!
