Chelsea DDA approves funding for popular festivals, SculptureWalk

By Lisa Allmendinger

Three of Chelsea’s popular downtown festivals will get a cash infusion from the city's Downtown Development Authority.

Craig Common, chairman of the Sounds and Sights Committee, requested the funding for Chelsea’s trio of festivals at the DDA’s monthly meeting. The DDA gave the request unanimous approval Thursday morning.

Sounds and Sights is an event that takes place on 11 consecutive Thursday nights from June to August. The Sounds and Sights Festival, a three-day event, formerly known as Summerfest, takes place in July and includes music and entertainment, a car show and open-air art market. Hometown Holiday is Chelsea’s early December three-day event that celebrates the holiday season.

The festival committee’s request was $5,000 less than last year, Common said, because the events are starting to make some money.

“These (events) have brought a lot of great recognition to Chelsea,” said Mark Heydlauff, treasurer of the DDA.

In addition, the DDA gave Chelsea’s SculptureWalk, the city’s public art display, $6,750. The amount was a little less than was requested last year said Patti Swartz, a DDA member and coordinator of the event.

Swartz said she hopes this year that people will buy some of the art. “Our main goal is to get sales,” she said.

No one has bought any of the 10 sculptures that change each year and are displayed downtown on cement pads.

Chelsea does a great job of supporting their local events and the results are apparent with the downtown traffic which is generated by those events. Does anyone know how much was approved for each of the three events mentioned in the article? Also, what are the price ranges for the public art pieces? Thanks, David Rhoads, City of Saline Council Member.

Thanks DDA for supporting these festivals. They are such a part of Chelsea and make living here that much more wonderful.
