Chelsea library program brings authors together with students and residents

By Lisa Allmendinger

As part of National Library Week, authors Gail Carson Levine, Jerzy Drozd and Johanna Hurwitz will hold workshops on April 13 in the Chelsea schools during the day and give talks at the Chelsea District Library in the evening.

Levine is the author of "Ella Enchanted," a Newbery Honor book and motion picture. Drozd is a Michigan cartoonist and Chelsea District Library’s artist-in-residence, and Hurwitz is the author of many books for young readers, including "Class Clown" and "Teacher’s Pet," according to information provided by the library.

This is the second year the library has hosted Authors in Chelsea, a program that brings students together with nationally-known, award-winning authors and illustrators to explore the art and craft of writing and illustrating, according to the release from the library.

“Authors in Chelsea will help students see that writing is a viable option for a future. Real people write these wonderful books, someday they could too,” Patrick Little, principal of Beach Middle School, said in the release.

The library is donating books by each author and illustrator to the participating school classrooms.

Each author will hold workshops in the Chelsea schools in the second-, fourth- and sixth-grade classrooms.

Visitors are then invited to the library at 6:30 on April 13 for a presentation from each author that will be followed by a book signing. Books by each author will be available for purchase at the library.

The library serves 14,000 residents in the City of Chelsea plus residents of Dexter, Lima, Lyndon and Sylvan townships. More than 20,000 people visit the facility each month.
