Chelsea man's sexual assault trial postponed
The second trial for a Chelsea man accused of sexually assaulting a minor was postponed this week.
Michael Kohler, 46, was to face jury selection Monday in Washtenaw County Circuit Court on four counts of first-degree and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
However, court officials said defense attorney requested the delay after finding new information they needed to explore further.
Jurors could not reach a verdict after more than seven hours of deliberations at Kohler’s first trial in July. Circuit Judge David Swartz declared a mistrial the next day.
Authorities charged Kohler last year after the victim, who police said is related to Kohler, came forward alleging abuse dating as far back as 1997.
Kohler posted a $5,000 bond in September and remains free pending a new trial date on Feb. 22.
