M-52 road work in Chelsea, Manchester planned by MDOT for 2011
Heavy equipment and orange construction cones will become a familiar sight in Chelsea and Manchester when work on M-52 gets under way.
The $3.524 million project is part of the 2011 Michigan Department of Transportation program plan that includes ramp realignments to I-94 as well as curb and gutter work.
A detour of southbound M-52 as well as ramp closures are part of the project that has an anticipated completion date of Nov. 30.
There’s good news and bad news for Manchester residents as well.
In late spring, perhaps as early as June, it’s expected that there will be a reconstruction and realignment of the M-52 and the Main Street intersection as well as new drainage, curb and gutter, deck replacement and abutment work on the bridge over the River Raisin at a cost of $8.41 million.
The work is scheduled for M-52 from Austin Road to Dutch Drive over the River Raisin. Also, a 1.68-mile stretch on M-52 from Duncan Street to Chi-Bro Park and Main Street from Elton to M-52 will get streetscape elements, including brick pavers, decorative lighting, trash receptacles and benches at a cost of $735,114.
The bad news — there will be a northbound detour for M-52 traffic for bridge work, and traffic will be maintained from Hibbard to the bridge with a temporary traffic signal. In addition, there will be sidewalk closures and intermittent closure of on-street parking on Main Street.

Having suffered through this summers debacle of the repairs to M52 it looks like we are in for another year of delayed start, ridiculously slow progress and ultimately an unfinished job at the end of 2011!!
