Sylvan Township, Chelsea at odds over share of sewer debt

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Sylvan Township and Chelsea are in disagreement over responsibility for paying off the township's sewer debt, according to reports from Chelsea Standard and Chelsea Update.

A letter from Sylvan Township officials to the city was published Tuesday on the Standard's website charging that Chelsea owes 41 percent of the $12.5 million water debt, according to reports. The letter contends that "Chelsea Village incorporated as a city in 2004 after the bonds, which Sylvan now owes, were issued in September 2001," the Standard reported.

Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan told Chelsea Update that the township's request was outlandish, while Council Member Frank Hammer said the issue warrants discussion.

While on the surface the claim does appear to make sense, the timing is strange. The debt was created in 2001/2002. Chelsea became a city in 2004. Twp. Supervison Lang just now, October 2012, made a claim to be reimbursed Chelsea's share of the debt? Why was this not addressed BEFORE the 4.4 mil tax increase? Why is this just now being addressed less than 2 weeks from Lang's reelection hopes. I for one am very upset about this huge millage increase due to the Twp. Government's errors. The millage has now passed (barely) and the taxes will soon be increased. Now you make a claim? Thanks for nothing Lang, time to go.

Sounds reasonable to me. Sort of like a debt taken out in marriage. Your ex cant walk away from it, leaving you responsible for 100% of it. Imagine if 99% of the population are now part of the Chelsea Village. That 1% sure would be screwed in Sylvan.
