Thief smashes car windows to steal valuables in Chelsea parking lots

By Cindy Heflin

Chelsea police are warning residents not to leave valuables in the passenger compartment of vehicles after a series of smash-and-grab incidents in parking lots.

Police said a thief or thieves have smashed windows in three vehicles parked in lots in the past two days. In two incidents small items lying in plain view in the vehicles were stolen. In one case, a window was smashed but nothing was stolen.

The incidents occurred in the 1100 block of South Main Street, the 700 block of Taylor Street and the 100 block of North Main Street, police said.

Police said the thefts have occurred during daylight hours. They asked anyone who sees someone loitering around vehicles to call 911 and describe the suspect and his or her behavior to a dispatcher.

Drugs, drugs and drugs. Petty theft is usually about quick cash for drugs. Hide all your stuff in a parked car, even parking meter change. Lots of desperate punks out there.

Stow it, don't show it.

Again, don't blame the victim. Doglover is right, only so much can be done to protect your belongings.

In one case, nothing was stolen. You can only do so much to protect yourself and your belongings.

How valuable is a valuable? I remember probation being revoked for a guy who grabbed a disposable camera out of an unlocked car. Keep everything out of sight and you'll have a safer and more pleasant drive as well as a more secure park.

Here we go again blaming the victim. We have a right to believe our belongings are secure, especially in a locked vehicle!

One of those cars is mine, and the valuables were worth a couple hundred dollars, plus the cost of the busted window, not to mention the absolute hassle of it all. Regardless of value, if it's not yours don't touch i!
