Truck crashes into house on Main Street in Chelsea
The front porch on a Chelsea home was destroyed this morning after a Stockbridge man lost control of his truck when the steering locked up.
Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth said the man was driving south on M-52 near Sibley Road before 8 a.m. when the truck hit the home in the 600 block of North Main Street. No one was injured.
Toth said the man was approaching a right curve but continued to go straight, crossing left of the center line, after the steering on his 2003 Toyota Tundra locked up. He said the truck hit the curb and grazed a tree before knocking out three of the porch’s four pillars.
“That porch is destroyed,” Toth said. “There’s no question about that.”
One of the homeowners was home at the time.
Toth said the man was not exceeding the road’s 35 mph speed limit and alcohol was not a factor.
As of 1 p.m. today, Toth said workers were still trying to remove the truck from the porch without causing further damage to the house. He said the truck also had significant damage, though he was not sure if it was totaled. He said it was fortunate more damage wasn’t done.
“Luckily no one was coming the other way and there wasn’t a pedestrian on the sidewalk or anything like that,” he said. “He’s very lucky.”

So....I'm just wondering. This morning I hear a ton of sirens and wondered if there was a horrible accident somewhere or I just lived too close to the hospital. Was this related?

@Laurie, good thing you weren't there when the driver lost control. The house is one of my best friend's house and he told me about what happened. The car had to have been going at least 45 to cause the amount of damage done. As for the curve in the road, the guy was heading south and the road bends a little to the left as it goes past Vet's Park. If the steering locked up he would have gone right into his house.

Why in the world did this article run without a picture of the scene? I drove past there about 2 minutes after impact and it was a sight to see. The truck was still there as of 1:00 when I past again so plenty of time to take a picture. Also, given the damage to the truck...extensive to say the least and the tree and the porch, this story does not add up. To impale that truck into the house like it is, the driver could only have been accelerating. Steering can lock up all day long but that doesnt effect your BRAKES! What is scarier even is that I pass that way every day at that same time and could have easily been in his path of doom. Also the speed limit right there at that house turns to 25 when traveling south bound and there is no curve traveling south bound for him to have had a problem navigating. It is a straight shot down 52 into town. So none of this adds up at all but glad to hear the driver is safe. I feared the worse and am happy that his safety equipment in the truck saved him. On a serious note, I noticed the article said this was a Toyota truck. Is it possible the accelerator stuck? I dont mean to be funny. Seriously the accident damage makes that thought more plausible than the steering locking up...just saying.
