Crash backs up traffic on I-94 near State Street in Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

A crash was slowing traffic on westbound Interstate 94 in Ann Arbor Thursday morning.

The two-car crash was near State Street. Motorist reports indicated traffic was backed up all the way to Ypsilanti.

State Police were on the way to the crash at 7:45 a.m., a dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said.

That is always a dangerous off ramp. People try and weave in and out of traffic to get to that off ramp. Or they get fed up of having to wait a few more care lengths and try and get around traffic on the side of the highway to get off. Lots of people exit there and there have been many close calls when I've driven past. I don't think it's the road themselves that are the trouble. It's the way people drive, or, really don't drive. You jump traffic just to pull off a few yards later. If they had just waited 30 seconds they would have been at the off ramps. But no, the three cars in front of them were going to slow. So they race around them, cut them off and fly on by. All that construction on 23 has lowered the speed limit to 60 in some places. But people ignore it and drive 80. I think we could all use some extra driving lessons. Refresher courses.

Almost everyday there is a crash, in the Ann Arbor area, either on I94, US23 and M14. What the heck is going on in that area. Isn't it about time that our illustrious lawmakers, police and highway engineers took a serious look as to causes of these frequent crashes. Admittedly drivers, today, have no respect for fellow motorists but why so many crashes in these areas.

I think the accidents are due to the lack of traffic lanes in that area. They are attempting to push a whole lot of traffic through 2 or 3 lanes. Why does I-94 go down to two lanes in the Ann Arbor area? Ann Arbor is one of the few areas in Detroit where there is population growth every year and low unemployment. It appears we need more traffic lanes into Ann Arbor to handle all of the traffic.
