A crash in front of city hall in downtown Ann Arbor Wednesday afternoon caused a minor traffic disruption and significant damage to at least two cars.

Police officers quickly cleared the scene in front of the Ann Arbor Municipal Center at Fifth Avenue and Huron Street Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred at about 3 p.m. Two vehicles were towed away with significant front-end damage. One of the vehicles, a blue SUV, hit a traffic light post on the southeast corner of the intersection.

It is not known whether there were any injuries in the collision.

Lt. Jim Baird with the Ann Arbor Police Department said details on the crash were not immediately available Wednesday afternoon.

Police were sent to the crash after security guards within the 15th District Court alerted them. Officers at the scene declined to answer questions from an AnnArbor.com reporter.

Crime and courts reporter Kyle Feldscher contributed to this report.

Observed the crash scene right after it happened from my office window. I bet the eastbound car was speeding to get through the yellow light while the westbound car was trying to make a left hand turn before the light turned red. I am surprised there aren't more accidents of this nature. Pedestrians trying to cross Fifth Avenue are also in harms way as cars rushing to turn left don't always look for pedestrians in the walkway. We see people jumping out of the way all the time. I think there should be a left turn light to make this a safer intersection.

There were some really annoying gawkers making things even worse. One guy in front of me just couldn't get enough, even as rescue vehicles were attempting to navigate around them to reach the scene.

I'll bet that at least one of the drivers was distracted by our million dollar art. Go figure!

Good one, Goober! Or the hideous Justice Center that is too close to the street. I went past there a few minutes after it happened, and that was one of the first things that came to mind.
