Crash involving multiple cars backs up traffic on nortbound U.S. 23 at Washtenaw

By Kyle Feldscher

Traffic is backed up on northbound U.S. 23 east of Ann Arbor after a multiple car crash in the left lane, according to dispatchers.

Michigan State Police troopers were on scene at 5 p.m. Wednesday at northbound US-23 at Washtenaw Avenue for a crash involving either four or five vehicles. Dispatchers said the crash was blocking the left lane and causing a large traffic jam.

It was not clear if anyone was injured in the crash.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible. There was no time estimate for when the vehicles may be cleared.

There was also mayhem farther south on 23, where the !-94 ramps are, at around 6 PM. So many firetrucks!

If the map pin is in the right place, then the multi-car crash took place on ramp 37A, a simple right turn ramp. After seeing traffic jammed on westbound Washtenaw Avenue at US-23 near noon yesterday and seeing Exit 37B fill up with vehicles while waiting for a traffic light to turn green, I rather expected to read that this crash took place on the US-23 bridge, at the 270-degree Exit 37B, for it could be filled with vehicles again. Three lanes to choose from on eastbound Washtenaw, from one exit ramp: a left turn, through, and right turn. Someone on eastbound Washtenaw may have lost patience waiting for that freeway light to change; that light and traffic lights at Hogback/Washtenaw/Carpenter stay red for over two minutes.
