Crash on I-94 in Sylvan Township kills 21-year-old Jackson woman

By Amalie Nash

A 21-year-old Jackson woman was killed today when her vehicle left I-94 in Sylvan Township, struck a median embankment, went airborne and overturned, Michigan State Police said.

The crash occurred at about 3:15 a.m. on westbound I-94 near Pierce Road.

Police said Jessika Baier's vehicle left the roadway, traveled into the median and struck the median turnaround embankment. The vehicle went airborne and overturned in the median.

Baier, the lone occupant in the vehicle, died from her injuries, police said.

According to the Jackson Citizen-Patriot, Baier - who has won dozens of singing competitions over the last several years - was featured on American Idol earlier this year.

She competed in Puerto Rico and was among the final 16 who performed in front of the show’s famed judges. Baier didn’t make the cut to the show’s national competition, but a month later was offered a job at WKHM-FM (105.3.), the Citizen-Patriot reported.

Police said it's not clear what caused the crash. No further information was released this morning.
