Crash slows traffic at U.S. 23 and I-94 in Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

A crash was slowing traffic at U.S. 23 and Interstate 94 on the southeast side of Ann Arbor Thursday morning.

The two-vehicle crash was in the northbound lanes of U.S. 23 north of I-94, a dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said. It was not believed to be blocking the freeway, but a Google map showed a traffic backup on westbound I-94.

State police were on the way to the crash, the dispatcher said about 8 a.m.

There was one I saw just past Michigan Road exit. One car under a tree and the other facing up hill from the road. Weird to see this. I drove by it around 12:20 and 2 hours later? They were finally cleaning this out. Slow.

What must be news is that the signs said that US 23 North was closed at Washtenaw. Traffic was stopped at I-94. At the same time Washtenaw was closed a mile west of US 23 for a downed power line. What an mess.

Just adults playing their version of musical chairs. Solutions 1. Install a few RRFBs over the freeway and then trigger them at random when traffic volume increases. 2. Move a few cardboard police cars around on the shoulder complete with waving cardboard officer. 3, Accelerate the Smart Car program making Ann Arborites sooo rich darling they will all move out to Tahiti. 4. Charge an "A2 Loop Toll". Give the monies to the AAPS. Skim 1% for "Overpass Art".

I agree this is not news. It occurs daily. How about an article about what "they" intend to do about all these frequent crashes? "They" being the police. Do the city and county have recommendations for reducing the number of crashes? Has anyone's car insurance gone DOWN lately? These accidents and consequent injuries raise rates for all the rest of the safe drivers.

I think the recommendations have been made Ad nauseam. Its called slow down and give yourself room to react.

The most dangerous place of all: the entrance ramp onto northbound 23 at Washtenaw. There is the length of one short bridge for merging and at the same time there are cars exiting into the same space. Plus the thru traffic, including the inevitable semi, is going fast in the merge lane. I end up on the shoulder often waiting until I can merge and one time an exiting car cut right in FRONT of me as I was about to merge and somehow did not hit me. How about a sign saying Thru Traffic Keep Left at that point?

Merging on at that point is not too bad, if your car has some acceleration in it. Of course, attempting to merge while driving a Prius or the like is probably not a good idea. The thing to remember about that merge is that the cars that are coming on to the expressway need to be accelerating and the cars that are exiting the expressway need to be decelerating. if you are exiting, slow down and get in behind the cars that are attempting to enter. If you are attempting to enter the expressway, use the pedal on the right!

Totally agree. This area needs to be reconfigured and built to safer standards.

This isn't news. It's just a daily occurrence. News would be if there wasn't at least one accident tying up traffic on the freeways around Ann Arbor.

Absolutely! I always look and ONLY wonder how many accidents there will be not IF there will be! Drivers should have to pass an IQ test to get their license!
