Crashes have I-94 west of Chelsea down to one lane in both directions

Overturned trucks have both east- and westbound Interstate 94 west of Chelsea down to one lane this morning.

"It was a fluke," said Sgt. Chris Pascoe of the Michigan State Police Ypsilanti Post. "Two semis both drove off the road and overturned last night within in an hour of each other." The crashes happened within a mile of each other, one in the eastbound lanes and one in the westbound lanes near the Kalmbach Road exit on I-94 he said.

Pascoe said he expects lanes to be closed for much of the morning with periodic complete closures of the freeway to clean up the accident scene. The trucks are mostly off the freeway, he said, but the lane closures are necessary for the cleanup and investigation.

Pascoe said police suspect the drivers may have fallen asleep in both cases. Neither crash caused any injuries.

The first crash occurred about 3 a.m. today on eastbound 94 near Pierce Road, Pascoe said. The second happened about an hour later on westbound 94 near Kalmbach Road.
