Crashes slow morning commute in Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

Several crashes slowed the morning commute in the Ann Arbor area Tuesday.

A two-car crash on westbound Interstate 94 at U.S.-23 was on the shoulder at 8 a.m., but a Google traffic map showed a backup in the area. Police had not arrived at the crash yet, a dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said.

Two earlier crashes at northbound 23 at Nixon Road on the north side of Ann Arbor and on westbound Interstate 94 at Scio Church Road on the west side were in the clearing stages, the dispatcher said.

I was driving EB on 94 this morning near Wiard Road on the way to the airport in a group of cars going the speed limit. A small SUV in the right lane a ways ahead of me did a jerky (non-smooth) passing move into the center lane to go around a slower car in the right lane. The small SUV started rocking back and forth in the center lane. I slowed down and the guy in the left lane (just ahead of me) slowed down too. The small SUV kept rocking and then must have overcorrected, because he suddenly lost control and rolled it through the left lane and through 3 lanes of WB 94. His car ended up in the right lane of WB 94. Fortunately he hit a gap in EB traffic, because it didn't look like there were any other cars colliding. Hopefully he wasn't too badly hurt.
