2 burglary attempts reported in 4 days at Ann Arbor home

By Lee Higgins

Ann Arbor police are investigating 2 attempted burglaries in 4 days at a home in the 1000 block of Kay Parkway.

After someone attempted to break into the home between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Aug. 4, the homeowner put a new dead bolt on the door, police said.

On Monday, between 9:30 a.m. and 5:45 p.m., the lock was damaged, police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said.

Anyone with information can call the police department's tip line at (734) 794-6939.

Look at the crimemapping.com thing. There are an ASTOUNDING number of home invasions in Ann Arbor. Speaking from experience, just having a deadbolt isn't enough. There are a few things you can do other than getting an alarm if you can't do that for whatever reason. Most of the time, if there isn't something easy such as an unlocked door or window, these dirtbags will kick in your front door. 1. Check the screws that screw the plate into your door jamb for your deadbolt. You very well could have some really puny, short screws in there. Doors are incredibly easy to kick in if that is the case. Get to the hardware store and replace them with longer ones 2. Get a door reinforcer to put around your deadbolt on the door itself. Your door probably has a wood core and that will break apart if it gets kicked and shouldered, even if the outer shell of the door is steel. You can get these at any hardware store. It is much easier to put one of these things on if you are installing a new deadbolt, but if you are kind of handy, you can do it after the fact. Exactly how much stronger that makes the door is debatable, but it is clearly visable from the outside and the deterrent factor is what you are going for here. 3. Get one of the steel reinforcer kits to put into your door jamb. I got mine online and installed it myself. I am not handy by any means, but I did it pretty easily in a half hour. That thing will make it much harder for your door jamb to break and the door to open. The dirtbag probably would move on to an easier target after not accomplishing much with the first few kicks. There are a number of these things available online. I did the Strikemaster II. If someone REALLY wants in, they will get in. Just make it as tough as possible and hope they move on. I would recommend that everyone in this residential neighborhood check their doors and windows to make sure they are secure. This may not be the only home targeted.

See article written by the retired police officer. Does bring to mind a relative, a friend (not a real friend) of a relative , and or somebody who has knowledge as stated by previous writers. As a tactic coming back the second time would be normally un-expected. Maybe we need citizen volunteers to help the police protect the property? See article by the retired police officer.

Maybe someone can call "Rent a Rottweiler" or get a neighbor to keep watch while the homeowners are at work.

After 2 strikes, (4 days apart) watch out on Friday. There is something in the home that somebody wants. Be careful out there homeowner. I don't know how else to prevent strike 3, unless it is a dog or a hand gun.

I think I would leave the door unlocked and lay in wait.
