2 maintenance trucks stolen on Ann Arbor's north side

By Kyle Feldscher

This article has been corrected to reflect neither of the pickup trucks have been recovered.

Two maintenance trucks were reported stolen from an apartment complex and a housing cooperative on Ann Arbor’s north side Tuesday, neither of which have been recovered to this point.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said trucks were reported stolen from Arrowwood Hills Cooperative Housing and the Willowtree Apartments Tuesday.

Patricia Byrd, resident manager at Arrowwood Hills, said it’s the first time in her 30 years at the housing cooperative that a maintenance truck has been stolen. She said it’s a major inconvenience for the cooperative’s residents, who pay for it.

“It was very shocking, and we’re very busy so it’s very inconvenient,” she said.

Bush said the truck was stolen from outside the management office of Arrowwood Hills sometime between 5:10 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The office is located in the 2500 block of Arrowwood Trail. Byrd said workers at the cooperative returned to work Tuesday morning and discovered the truck had been stolen.

The truck belonging to the Willowtree Apartments was stolen sometime between 5 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday, Bush said. The truck was parked near a maintenance shed in the 1800 block of Willowtree Lane.

A representative from Willowtree Apartments declined comment on the theft Wednesday.

It’s unknown at this point how the trucks were stolen, Bush said. There was no suspect description available from police Wednesday morning.

Both of the stolen trucks were pickups with snowplows attached to the front. Bush said the truck belonging to Arrowwood Hills is a red 2005 Ford Super Duty. There’s silver tape on part of the tailgate, one of the tail lights is cracked and covered with tape and there is damage to the rear driver’s side. The license plate number is CB 13005, she said.

Byrd said the snowplow on the front of the truck was new, as were the tires. She said police told her it’s normal for trucks such as this one to be found without the snowplow on the front, which could be sold as scrap metal.

There was no description given for the truck stolen from Willowtree Apartments.

It’s unknown if the two thefts are related, but Byrd said she thinks it’s likely.

“I’m just wondering why they would steal ours,” she said.

Anyone with information on the thefts or the location of the pickup truck belonging to Arrowood Hills is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP (773-2587) or call the cooperative directly at 734-665-3116.

Byrd said it’s important for the community to speak up about thefts such as this one.

“I would like anyone who has information to tell us. Call us up, do it anonymously, with any information, please give us a call,” she said. “We need to work together as a community to stop this from happening. If it can happen to me, it’ll happen to you.”

I don't think we all can handle the difficult job of maintenance so when you need plummer for someone too fix something that you cant then don't make fun of them.

I just spoke with Lt. Bush, who told me information given to me earlier in the day was incorrect. Bush told me the truck stolen from Willowtree was stolen and recovered in Detroit without a snowplow in a separate incident six years ago. When she read the report Wednesday morning, Bush confused that incident with this theft. I spoke with her a few minutes ago and she corrected that information. I've changed the story and headline to reflect this. I apologize for the confusion and the correction.

I tried to update the headline but it wasn't done immediately because of a browser error. That's fixed now and should update soon.

Ah, yes, the new economy. Why work when you can steal ? It keeps the unemployment numbers low, too ! And of course the phrase "we must work together blah blah blah ..." is just the liberal refrain from Kumbaya. It translates into something like "we are helpless. Please somebody in government, do something." As long as thieves know they have a low probability of being caught, have feelings of entitlement for others' property, (I wonder where that came from. No wait, I think I know) and have no fear of the punishment for stealing, then this will just escalate into a way of life. Wait, it already has...

There is nothing to comment on that won't get removed for violating the conversation guidelines. Therefore I will not take the bait. Thanks for playing.

"She said it's a major inconvenience for the cooperative's residents, who pay for it." Anybody know if that statement is accurate? I thought Arrow Wood was gov't housing not payed for by the residents. somebody enlighten me on this.

Arrowwood Hills Housing Corporation has 350 shares. Each one of those shares is owned by a resident. They own 1/350th of the corporation. That includes the property, buildings, and all assets including cash reserves. Even if they receive gov't assistance, they still own the share. Now you know!
