A neighbor and footprints in the snow help Pittsfield Township police capture larceny suspect
An alert neighbor and some footprints in the snow led Pittsfield Township police officers to a 22-year-old man suspected of breaking into at least one vehicle and stealing an emblem off another in an apartment complex.
A resident of Glencoe Hills apartments off Washtenaw Avenue called police at 5:55 a.m. today after witnessing what he thought was a break-in involving his neighbor's vehicle, reports said.
The witness pointed officers in the direction of an adjacent building, where the suspect was seen. Deputy Police Chief Gordy Schick said officers followed footprints in the snow and noticed a light turn on in an apartment in the building where the suspect was ultimately found.
The witness told police he saw the suspect, a 22-year-old Pittsfield Township man, inside the neighbor's pick-up truck, but Schick said it is unclear how he gained entry.
Schick said the officers used good instincts to find the suspect and the stolen property, which included about $100 worth of contractor's tools. An emblem reported stolen from a Cadillac in a separate incident in the area was also found with the suspect, Schick said, and the investigation is ongoing.
The suspect was jailed and is expected to be arraigned Thursday.

Spelling error: "The witness pointed officers in the direction of an adjacent building, where the suspect was seen. Deputy Police Chief Gordy Schick said officers followed footprints in the snow and noticed a light turn on in an apartment in the building where the suspect was ultimately found." Think you meant '...and noticed a light turned on in an....' 'turned on'
