Police investigate report of fight outside Fifth Quarter in Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor police investigated a reported fight involving about 20 people outside the Fifth Quarter bar early Sunday morning, Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said.
Bush said a call reporting the fight came in about 2:02 a.m. Witnesses told police two groups of about 10 people each were fighting outside the bar, 210 South Fifth Ave.
When officers arrived, they encountered a chaotic scene, Bush said, with people screaming, running around and making verbal threats, though police did not see any fighting.
Officers found a 25-year-old Dearborn man, who said he had been hit in the face by an unknown person, Bush said.
No arrests were made and no further details were immediately available, Bush said.

How is it they still have a liquor license? What does it take to shut a bar down in Ann Arbor?

I visited this fine establishment a few weeks ago for a friend's birthday get together. I regularly frequent places like Arbor Brewing and Connors, but that night I bit my lip and tagged along. None of us are night owls. We usually go out early and call it quits around midnight. Arriving to 5Q before 9, we got a front row parking spot right in front of the door. We were about the only people in the building at the time, but that didn't stop us from getting our little party started. Side note: they were kind enough to let our group in for free, without cover charge, because we were celebrating a birthday. Once the club started filling up around 11, I could feel a tension growing in the air. I witnessed a few guys yelling things like "Im going to beat that guy's #$$" and provocative words of that nature. Just as I was ready to leve, it happened. It happened so quickly it took a minute to register what was happening (its not every day you witness a brawl break out). There were fist flying, bodies falling, and it was hard to tell a fighter from a bouncer. Very quickly the fight was dragged outside. Literally. One guy was dragged in a head lock right out the front door. Innocent patrons flooded outward to gawk at the unfolding fight. Admittingly, I was one of them. Again, its not every day you get to see this happen, and like a child, my curiosity overcame my better judgment. The first thing I see after getting outside was a young man unconscious on the hood of my car. He came to quickly, and the fight sizzled out when two police cruisers pulled up. I checked annarbor.com over the next few days to see if this story made light. It didn't; and it leaves me wondering how many other fights happen here that are dumbed down or not reported.

The Fifth Quarter again??? I wonder if closing at midnight would help? Lucky that no one was really injured or killed. I guess the fight is better on the outside rather than the inside.

sounds like a lot of these fights are outside of the establishment. perhaps security is doing something right to keep the problems under control. but once outside of the club what responsibility does the establishment have? i don't think there's something to be said here about this business nor should it be closed down because it has random fights. i'm sure other bars in the area have just as many problems but just don't get as large a proportion of the coverage that the Fifth Quarter does. perhaps there is something to be said about the news source?

When are we going to shut this place down??? What is it going to take? There are always fights here and I just read that the owner owe 100,000+ in back taxes.

Perhaps our disagreement over the use of the phrase "Fifth Quarter" should be decided with a visit upon the said establishment? If I had a dueling glove I would bring it upon your cheek good sir!

I think the club's name could be $1.25, Mister Ferguson. Not impossible.

Maybe they should rename the bar to "Fight Club."

I assume that all these fights are a result of arguments regarding the mathematical impossibility of the bar's name. Maybe they should just change the name to This Statement Is A Lie. Problem solved.

I'm sure all this alleged violence and the alleged crimes taking place are due to socioeconomic status of the clientele. If they only had the means to pay for the drinks at establishments that we the privileged people frequent, none of this would be happening. We, the privileged people have failed them. Let us embrace them. We should reward them with a free ride to the University. This is not their fault- it's ours. Excuse me while I gag on my Silver Spoon.

AnnArbor.com might as well just schedule this news to be automatically posted every couple weeks. "Fight outside Fifth Quarter." "Fight outside Fifth Quarter." "Fight outside Fifth Quarter." "Fight outside Fifth Quarter." Anybody NOT see the pattern yet?

Gee, seems like we've read this story before! What is it gonna take to shut this place down?!?! No more dance clubs in AA, dance music attracts people FROM OUT OF TOWN. Turn it into a jazz or folk club for the townies to enjoy. Or at least a rocknroll club that I would enjoy.

That's true! Then I wouldn't have to fight all the football traffic on my way to the Farmer's Market to buy my organic produce and $20 Zingerman's sandwiches.

Yeah, shut down the college as well; it attracts people from out town too.
