Ann Arbor man faces retrial on charge of unlawful imprisonment of teenager

By Art Aisner

An Ann Arbor man is headed to prison for attacking his roommate with a knife and then stealing his vehicle in an unprovoked attack in the fall of 2009.

And court records show Jerome Powell will be retried on unlawful imprisonment charges stemming from the same incident.

Powell, 33, was recently ordered to serve between two and five years in prison, and was given 442 days of credit for time served, court records show.

He was convicted of assault, domestic violence and unlawfully driving away an automobile following a two-day trial in November. Jurors acquitted him of charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder for attacking the man he shared a home with in the 600 block of West Summit Street in September 2009.

The 40-year-old victim suffered a laceration to his face and recovered.

The jury could not reach a verdict on one count of unlawful imprisonment after several hours of deliberations. Police said they found a 17-year-old boy with his hands and legs bound in the basement when they responded to the assault complaint. Powell denied any involvement, records show.

A second trial is scheduled in March.

A second trial in March may not be soon enough. Of course Powell would denie any involvment. I hope the 17 yr. old isn't scared for life. (hopefully he can talk at the trial).
