Ann Arbor man finds intruder in his room, recovers stolen TV
Ann Arbor police are searching for a man who was caught in the act of breaking into a home and attempting to steal a TV.
Lt. Renee Bush said police were sent at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday to the 1000 block of Hill Street for a report of a home invasion in progress. Bush said a 21-year-old Ann Arbor man came into his room and confronted a man who had broken in.
When the resident asked the man what he was doing, the man said he was looking for someone who didn’t live there, Bush said. He then fled through a basement window that police believe he used to enter the home, according to Bush.
The 21-year-old man found his 50-inch flat screen TV outside the basement window and brought it back inside the home, Bush said. It’s unknown if any other items were stolen.
The man is described as black, about 25 years old, 5-foot-10 inches tall, 170 pounds and wearing a black coat, dark red shirt and brown shorts, Bush said.
Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.

What if this guy sneaks into your home at 2 a.m.? You wake up, and he's standing there watching you. You should just ask him please to exit by the same window through which he entered? "Oh, and if you could not rape me or kill me or steal my TV, that would be even nicer of you." I don't know what I would do, but I guarantee you I would consider it more important than the value of a television set.

Wow, I never knew Ann Arbor was so wild! Everyone packing heat, and blasting perps! Main street must look like a scene out of "Death Wish 3".

Not sure who you are referring to but I know many people from Jackson that work or come here to visit. So they should have no opinion on matters that may affect them? Funny.. well limiting freedom is limiting freedom I guess. So much for the First and Second Amendment... meh can't be all that important

No, it is not over a TV, but invading one's home, being inside it when I'm there as well. I could be harmed. It is a very dangerous situation. Better him than me. Now this guy is free to do it again, and next time some innocent person may get hurt. No it is more than a TV - It is personal safety

Shoot a man over a TV? You bet, my resident, my TV and you don't belong here. We have a permit to carry and would have it on person. No small talk, no shooting from the back. You wouldn't be able to get up and run before the police got here. These bad boys need a Job, but who is going to hire such?

alex, also the article appears in a relevant industry publication. Sorry you don't approve. The article's author more importantly is highly credentialed, perhaps if you looked at things in more than just the most superficial level, you may just learn something. http://www.stevenwdulan.com/Attorney.htm Steven W. Dulan is a licensed attorney and real estate broker and has held a Michigan real estate license since 1983. He holds a BA degree from Michigan State University with a double major in International Studies and Political Science. Mr. Dulan also holds a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where he was awarded a full scholarship based on academic excellence. Maybe, just maybe..

Yes you have made it VERY clear that you are not aware of a great many things associated with self defense. Feel free to have a Q&A with the criminal who broke into your house if/when it occurs. Let us know if wishing and reasonable discussion "feels" like it fixes things. IN the meantime, those of us who understand how things work in the real world... MCL 780.951 (Public Act 311 of 2006) states: "(1) Except as provided in subsection (2), it is a rebuttable presumption in a civil or criminal case that an individual who uses deadly force or force other than deadly force under section 2 of the self-defense act has an honest and reasonable belief that imminent death of, sexual assault of, or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another individual will occur if both of the following apply: (a) The individual against whom deadly force or force other than deadly force is used is in the process of breaking and entering a dwelling or business premises or committing home invasion or has broken and entered a dwelling or business premises or committed home invasion and is still present in the dwelling or business premises, or is unlawfully attempting to remove another individual from a dwelling, business premises, or occupied vehicle against his or her will. (b) The individual using deadly force or force other than deadly force honestly and reasonably believes that the individual is engaging in conduct described in subdivision (a)." I wasn't aware that B+E, home invasion, and theft were the same as rape and murder. I also didn't know that they were offenses punishable by death. I also didn't know that all area residents are allowed to be judges, juries, and executioners either. good to know.

Yes JS I responded correctly. Bruce's scenario starts with a crime. Breaking, entering, home invasion and theft. No pre crime. Actual crime.

It's not about a TV, it's about breaking and entering! Maybe this time he gets away without anything but next time he might break in and have a gun or knife, maybe he will rape someone, getting criminals off the streets makes everyone safer, and if he was shot he might think twice before trying to steal again or he might end up dead and we would not have to worry about he being a criminal ever again. Drug users usually start off with one drug and then get into stronger drugs, criminals start off with small crimes and if not caught go on to bigger and worse crimes. How many times do we see criminals charged with murder that have a long criminal history? If our court system would keep criminals in for the full amount of time they were sentenced to instead of giving them time off for good behavior we wouldn't have to worry about needing our guns as much as we do now. If I find someone in my home the coroner can come get them no matter what they were stealing from me.

In addition, "King George, **** nay!" and "America, **** yeah!" aren't really 2 sides of the same coin, given that there was no "America" at the time, but rather 13 separate British colonies. But that's neither here nor there...

OH and the Police could move on and do their job easier, if one less criminal was walking the streets. One less criminal could be walking the streets if we all did our parts. Would you rather they were looking for him or booking him? And you've very clearly articulated your "stance" on the topic...we realize you are no George Zimmerman. He volunteered to keep his neighborhood and neighbors safe as part of his duty and aspirations to a law enforcement career... You'd rather pat them on the head and send them on their merry way....

Whether canine or human, swift movement is necessary. Make your attack before the gunman can react. Bunnyabbot, you say that a burglar drugged a homeowner's dog. Until now, I had thought that only happened in fiction. In the book Deception, written by Randy Alcorn, a homicide detective's bull mastiff was drugged.

@gonavy, we are not part of a "K-9 Squad", I just took some courses with my dog for fun and mental stimulation for the dog (he had fun too) and we never completed a "Certified program", they are interesting in many ways, I would take them with my next dog @gonavy and DNB, I do know of a breakin growing up wear the homeowners dog was given something in some sort of meat, the dog lived, I believe it was found passed out (drugged), but a terribly scary thought. One thing I learned while taking a dog training course was about "food control" that is get the dog use to not begging, getting or forging for food and not to be a vacuum dog looking for crumbs. My dog will only accept food from me or family members or if I give him a signal or verbal command that it is ok. Given to his own devises I don't know 100% it would work, but I have left temptations out for him several times as practice to good results. When I feed him he has to wait until I decide he may procede, it was actually one of the very first "tricks" I taught him as a puppy. It is my food until I let him have it.

bunny: I saw this story on FB, a friend of a friend of mine. There was an attempted robbery of a home in Iowa, and they killed two of his four labs. The toxicology report showed they poisoned some tacos, which was fed to the dogs. He's offering a $5,000 reward now; a very sad story. Obviously, there's some pretty sick individuals who would not let a dog, or dogs, get in their way. http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/Family-Seeks-Answers-For-Poisoned-Dogs-145458275.html
