Ann Arbor man grabs intruder by the arm, leads him out of house during break-in
After discovering someone was in his home and taking a television off of a wall mount, an Ann Arbor man approached the intruder, grabbed his arm and escorted him out of the home.
The 22-year-old Ann Arbor man was alerted to the break-in at his home in the 1100 block of Packard Road after his dog began barking at the intruder, who had entered through an unlocked screen door at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush.
Bush said the man approached the intruder, as he was attempting to remove a 42-inch Sony TV from the wall, and asked him what he was doing. The intruder made a move toward the door to run, but the man grabbed him by the arm and took him outside.
The intruder took off at a full sprint away from the home, going on Packard Road toward Dewey Avenue, Bush said. The man called police to alert them of the incident after leading the intruder outside.
The intruder is described as white, in his 20s, about 190 pounds, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, stonewash jeans and blue and white tennis shoes, Bush said.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.

OMG! He was wearing hoodie? Would that have made it OK to shoot him? Just asking.

I'm guessing the police would prefer we not take matters into our own hands. If we can safely retreat then that is the best course of action. Having said that, if I'm in a similar situation I might transform from a mild-mannered middle-age woman into a fire-breathing, hell-hath-no-fury force of nature who would beat an intruder with his or her own arm. I commend the victim for not going that route.

Retreat to where? The man was already in his own home.

Give a thieving intruder a wide-screen TV; you have gotten rid of him for today. Teach him how to buy his own TV and you've gotten rid of him until he decides he wants the rest of your stuff. "... entered through an unlocked screen door..." There's your problem.

It's was the homeowners fault. Amazing comment.

I'm seeing a lot of speculation here. Maybe he wasn't a TV thief but rather an "undocumented appliance repossessor".

Relax everyone....Ann Arbor PD says the recent rash of robberies and home invasions is nothing to be alarmed about. When you find someone in your home robbing you, offer him a sandwich and go back to bed.

Wow- not scared to take on a 190 lb, 20 yr old without having a gun. The guy can even sleep at night knowing nobody was killed, he still has his TV, and no bloody mess to clean up.

This guy did not do anyone any favors by escorting him to the door! If you are man enough to escort him out hold him for police or keep your distance.

Or the same house again, now that he knows the owner doesn't have a gun.

Meant to add the intruder will now likely target a neighbors house.

I can honestly say that if he were in my home the police would not be out looking for him now.

Another outlaw cable guy, one of those roving miscreants who plague the area every Spring. They are kind of a dot.com era re-make of the driveway sealers of yesteryear, and I have been told some of them even have tattoos.

You don't "approach" intruders. You attack, assault, abuse, aggrieve, abase, attenuate, annihilate, and apprehend them.

After grabbing his arm is he legally allowed to beat the heck out of him in his own home?

That would be covered by the Self Defense Act. Essentially, a person in his own home is virtually immune from prosecution when claiming self-defense, except under limited circumstances. Basically, you have no duty to guarantee the personal safety of an intruder, and the law all but presumes that the act of home invasion creates the conditions that permit the use of force, up to and including deadly force. The balance is tipped heavily in favor of the homeowner/legal resident of the home, but a prosecutor could try to rebut the presumption of self-defense if the "intruder" were another legal resident of the home, a police officer, a relative of a legal resident of the home, etc. I didn't see an exception for a guy stealing a 42" TV, but you'd have to ask a lawyer to be sure.

Yikes, that description sounds almost exactly like me. Except I watch "TV" on my laptop, not a ginormous television.... Anyway, I promise I was teaching in Tukwila, WA at the time.

Grabbed him by the arm?!?!? This is wrong in so many ways, yet not knowing even the slightest of details, who knows? I know one thing for certain, if it were my house, it would've gone differently...I have a hungry dog that does NOT like intruders (see photo to left)
