Ann Arbor man hospitalized after assault by 5 men outside house party

By Kyle Feldscher

A 20-year-old Ann Arbor man was hospitalized Monday after being beaten outside of a house party by about five men, according to Ann Arbor police.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said the man went to a party in the 500 block of Walnut Street. He arrived at the party and was immediately told to leave by one of the partygoers.

The man left the house and waited outside for a woman he was planning on meeting, Bush said. Eventually, he started asking where she was at because she wasn’t coming outside.

Another person told him that she had left and he needed to get off the property. The man told police he was then punched in the face and fell to the ground. He stood back up and the men began to punch him in the face and stomach, Bush said.

Passers-by eventually broke up the fight and the man walked back to his house. When he arrived, a roommate called an ambulance at and he was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital. Police responded to the hospital at 3:02 a.m. Monday.

He suffered swelling in his right eye area and soreness in his stomach, Bush said.

There is no further description of the alleged assailants.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.

I noticed once again commenters complaining about the students. Nowhere in the article(s) is anyone identified as a UM student. These are young townies using the annual return of UM students to campus as reason to act up... or the assorted drifters, street people, and panhandlers that are treated like near royalty by well-meaning though misguided Ann Arborites. If students are involved I'd say their student IDs would say Washtenaw Community College or EMU 9 times out of 10.

Your last statement is not correct. Being a student at EMU, I can assure you that Michigan students start fights just as much as any other group of college students. I would agree with you about the drifters looking to party that are not even enrolled at any college. It doesn't matter if it's in Ypsi or Ann Arbor. There are always bad apples that flock to a party and then start fights.

If these students would smoke pot rather than drink so much alcohol, there would not be so many fights. I've never heard of someone fighting because they were high on pot.

"a roommate called an ambulance at and he was taken to the University of Michigan " at once? at the pay phone? at the house?

If my college age student is on the streets at 2-3 a.m. he might just as well quit. Education I will pay for, not fights and parties.

Dad, I was not on the streets. I did not pass out on the street. I was in a house, and on the sidewalk. I bought the beer with my own money. I am a 25 year old graduate student. Please give me my space. And tell Mom I love her. I am glad we could have this little talk.

It's possible to be awake at 2 AM without fighting. Let's not blame the victims.

From all the house parties going on last night, as evidenced by the abundant trash on the streets today, it's not surprising there are going to be incidents like this happening. Expect more of the same as football parties begin in mass next week.

Alcohol, our government-approved intoxicant.

UM students are just getting more and more vicious...late 70's early 80's..assault records are not this high.

Not as much medicating going on, as in the old days !

Cathy

Probably not. Crime rates have been going down for 2 decades. We just hear about every single assault that happens.

So you ask a guy to leave a party, and he does leave. The man then stands outside. Do you: 1) Call the police and request their assistance in this matter?, or 2) Get 5 guys to beat the stuffing out of him? Seriously, alcohol is not a good addition to people who are already stupid.

Agreed, RG. If only there were a website that provided this sort of information. A "news" website, if you will. Oh well, I guess we'll never know the whole story.

I agree... but keep in mind that the only person to describe the incident to police was the victim.

May I point out the irony in Roy's comment and the lack of punctuation and capitalization?

Indeed, "started asking where she was at" is indefensible. I'd give him the pink slip.
