An Ann Arbor man charged with attempted murder for an alleged attack on his mother has hired a new attorney and is challenging a plea agreement with prosecutors. Court records show Anthony Pocrnich, 25, will appear in Washtenaw County Circuit Court on March 8 with Monroe-based attorney Bonita Hoffman to formally withdraw his plea on one count of attempted murder.
Further details about the plea and what Pocrnich now objects to were not available in court records. Hoffman did not return messages seeking comment. Pocrnich was arrested and accused of stabbing his 49-year-old mother repeatedly in the torso with a knife at about 6 a.m. on July 14 at their home in the 1400 block of Hatcher Crescent.
She was hospitalized for days but is recovering, police said. Doctors at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in York Township deemed him fit to stand trial last fall and he remains in custody on $100,000 bond. Records show Pocrnich was on probation for two years after a 2005 assault involving his mother. Art Aisner is a freelance writer for AnnArbor.com.
