Armed robbery suspect flees after finding victim's wallet empty
A suspect in an armed robbery attempt was foiled by the lack of anything to steal in Ypsilanti Monday.
Ypsilanti police said the victim was stopped in a vehicle for a traffic light near the 800 block of North Congress Street around 12:30 p.m. when a man approached the vehicle, produced a handgun and demanded money.
The man fled on foot when the victim showed him an empty wallet, police said.

This man is lucky. Someone my age who I'd known since I was born was shot and killed years ago when a mugger found his wallet empty. He didn't even live long enough to finish college. The killer ranted at trial about how my friend "deserved it" for being white, and his family heaped hurt onto the family of the victim, blaming them for their son's predicament. 19 years and he got life without parole. What a waste... two lives lost as a result of a completely unnecessary situation.

I always wonder what would happen to me if someone tried to rob me and found I had no money. I always assumed a more violent outcome, but hopefully it would be something more like this.

Empty wallets are a common sign in Michigan. Especially after eating at Zingermans Roadhouse. :)

This must be not at Normal and Congress per the map but at Summit and Congress where the light is. Which means it's too close to home and where I'm often driving. Yikes!

It's a sign of the times when even crime doesn't pay.

Well, at least the robber just ran off and didn't didn't do any more. On a lighter note, there is some good to come out of being out of cash.

The article's lead sentence is almost amusing: "...the lack of anything to steal in Ypsilanti...." The unintentional insult of the City might do well to be rephrased.

Considering how aa.com handles any crime that happens in Ypsi, I'm surprised that great first line isn't the headline! Definitely funny even for those of us who live in Ypsi.

You beat me to it, brimble, but I don't think it's "almost amusing," I think it's absolutely hilarious as written. Definitely needs to be changed, not only to remove any unintentional insult to Ypsilanti, but simply for clarity.
