Updated: Assault at Forest Street parking structure under investigation

A 20-year-old University of Michigan student suffered a broken jaw and had teeth knocked out when he was assaulted this morning at the Forest Street parking structure on South Forest Avenue, police said.

Detective Dave Monroe said the student was on the second floor of the structure at 2:30 a.m. when two men confronted him about urinating there.

One of the men then attacked him, Monroe said. They made a reference to the Marine Corps during the incident, Monroe said.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and remembered few details, Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said.

He was able to give police a description of his attacker: white, in his mid-20s, around 5 feet 6 inches tall, 145-150 pounds, with curly, blond hair, and was wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans.

Monroe said the attacker may have left in a red SUV or pickup truck.

Anyone with information can call police at (734) 794-6939.

This discription fits about a thousand men living in that neighborhood which consists of rich and often stone drunk agressive students.

Do we know anything about where in the structure this happened - was it at street level, or at one of the elevated levels, in an elevator lobby or in the stairs?

Any comments from the DDA, U of Michigan Parking and Transportation Services, or Republic Parking about the incident?

Did an alert go out to the University of Michigan because of the incident? (That structure is jointly operated between the DDA and the U).

Perhaps the author [Lee Higgins] could shed some light on it. I would hope that if the author did have any pertinent information, it would not have been withheld from the article. And I would think that Ed's questions would have been asked by the editor prior to publishing!

Here's the U of Michigan Police crime alerts:

http://police.umich.edu/?alerts=all

Nothing about this incident there. That page says

"Crime alerts are issued when a crime is reported to law enforcement, either on or near campus, that in the judgment of the DPS commanders constitutes an ongoing or continuing threat to the University community. The alerts are distributed via email to all Ann Arbor students, staff and faculty; fliers posted around campus; email to non-campus subscribers; and this web site.

If you wish to be notified by e-mail of new crime alerts, please e-mail crime.alert.request@umich.edu with the subject as Crime Alert Notification Request and the e-mail address you wish to use."

Are they going to issue this man a public urination citation? It sounds like he admits to it, and I think it would be inappropriate to attempt to prosecute the alleged assailants without charging him as well.

Urinating in the parking structure?
This guy is lucky the cops don't arrest him and put him on the sex offender registry!

Since the article states the victim was urinating on the suspect's car, and I doubt the suspect's car was parked in an elevator or stairwell, you can assume it occured where they park the cars.

Seriously? How brave do you have to be Marine to attack a drunk man at 2:30 in the morning...really...
