Brothers charged in Ypsilanti Township shooting

By Lee Higgins

Two brothers have been charged with shooting a man they know in the arm Saturday night in the 1000 block of McCarthy Court in Ypsilanti Township, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said. One of the men remains at large.

Rico Montez Chandler, 35, is wanted on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, a sheriff's department media summary said.

James Willard Chandler, left, is under arrest. Police are still seeking Rico Montez Chandler, right.

His brother, James Willard Chandler, 41, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm to commit a felony, the summary said.

They are accused of shooting a man at about 7:15 p.m., deputies said, leaving him hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries. The motive for the shooting isn't clear.

Bond for James Chandler was set at $250,000, and he is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 16.

Michigan Department of Corrections records show both bothers have served time in prison.

Rico Chandler is currently on parole after being released from prison Nov. 30, records show. He served time for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and carrying a weapon with intent. Records show he also has convictions for receiving and concealing stolen property, assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

James Chandler is currently on probation for resisting police, records show. He also has past convictions for attempting to assault an employee or escape jail, assault with intent to rob while armed, and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Rico Chandler can call the sheriff's tip line at (734) 973-7711.

The Washtenaw Circuit Courts got a good review by an independent evaluator: but it was all based on how many cases they pushed through per year. The 14th & 15th CCs are trial mills: summoning citizens for jury duty at 5 times the national rate. And if you don't or can't comply: they'll issue a bench warrant which means you'll have an automatic arrest hanging over your head the first time your ID is run by a cop. They take any adult who's not a convict with a drivers license: meaning the entire system is based on having 12 people of any ability at all making legal decisions they have 99% chance of not understanding. What part of: it's-not-working don't people understand?

These are good boys: I am sure they were misunderstood that they didn't mean to not shoot the gun that they were not supposed to have in the first place. Just look at the smile on their faces and the nice clothes they are provided with. Such a happy family...

We can all make our comments about, the judges, magistrates, prosecutors. But those of you who think you can do a better job, electing better qualifed people, I suggest you run as a canidate for these offices. I won't comment on any of the above, I have never walked in their shoes. (and don't think I want to). It looks to me like they are doing a hell of a job, count them, then count the criminals.

I agree, we need to get rid of these judges who keep letting these criminals out of prison. How about stiffer penalties, too i.e. the "death" sentence? There is no such thing as rehabilitaiton for these harden criminals. It has been proven over and over again. We do need to start seeing the names of the prosecutors, judges, etc. in the paper, too, so we are better imformed on how to go about getting them out of public service, too.

I'm surprised he was let out on personal bond, in the end most of the charges will be dropped and I'm sure these guys will get time served while awaiting trial. People in Washtenaw County better wake up and start electing qualified and far more conservative judges. The days of giving people a second chance and plea bargaining every case down to nothing needs to end. Our communities are infested with criminals, all of them Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township and Ann Arbor. Rehabilitation doesn't work, the recidivism rate in Washtenaw County is terrible. Hopefully AA.com will start printing the names of the magistrates and judges who hand out rediculous sentneces as well as the prosecutors who plea bargain every case.
