Counterfeit cases in Saline and Northfield Township appear coincidental, police say

By Art Aisner

Authorities in Northfield Township and Saline say they don't believe recent cases of counterfeit bills being passed are related.

Northfield officers on Thursday conferred with officials from the Saline Police Department to see if there is any obvious connections between the fake $20 bills that were passed at gas stations in both communities earlier this month. No link was found, Northfield Township Public Safety Director Bill Wagner said without elaborating.

Northfield officers confiscated four fake $20 bills from a 20-year-old man who tried to use them for gas at the Shell station in the 100 block of North Territorial Road last week. He also reportedly tried to use them at the Sunoco station down the road a day earlier.

Wagner said the case was turned over to the U.S. Secret Service for further investigation. The man could face up to five years in prison if convicted of counterfeiting charges.

Saline police are still trying to identify who passed fake $20 bills at the Speedway station in the 100 block of East Michigan Avenue on Jan. 5. The incident was not immediately reported, and no suspect information was available.

Anyone who receives a suspicious bill, or has information about the case is asked to call Saline police at 734-429-7911, or e-mail Det. Don Lupi at dlupi@cityofsaline.org.

I guess we all need to start checking all bills coming in and going out. I thought most cashiers checked for fake bills. I would sure hate to get one, and try to spend it. (not knowing it was fake)
