Crime alert issued after Ann Arbor woman wakes up to home invasion

By Kyle Feldscher

A 19-year-old Ann Arbor woman woke up to find two men in the hallway outside of her bedroom during an early morning home invasion Monday.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said the incident was one of eight home invasions reported during the weekend in the city.

The woman awoke at 3:40 a.m. Monday in her basement bedroom at her home in the 700 block of South Division Street to find two shadowy figures standing outside her open bedroom door. The woman told police she remembered shutting the door before she had fallen asleep.

Assuming the two figures were her roommates, the woman called out to them. When the figures didn’t move, she realized they weren’t supposed to be there and shouted at them, causing them to bolt up the stairs.

The woman followed the two men and watched them flee through an open rear door, Bush said. The men had accessed the home through an unlocked rear window.

The woman told police she couldn’t tell what race the men were, but said one of them was wearing a black and white plaid shirt, jeans and a baseball hat. The second suspect was described as tall, medium build and clean cut. She could not provide police with a clothing description for that suspect, Bush said.

Ann Arbor police called in a K-9 unit to search for the suspects Monday, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to locate the men. The woman reported a wallet belonging to her roommate, a 20-year-old Ann Arbor woman, was the only item stolen.

The University of Michigan Department of Public Safety released a crime alert on the incident Monday.

Bush said all of the weekend's break-ins occurred through unlocked windows or doors. She encouraged Ann Arbor residents to remain vigilant by keeping their homes locked during the nighttime hours or when they were away from home.

“People need to lock their doors and lock and secure their windows,” she said.

I hate when cops tell people to lock their doors and windows. Most people do not climb into open windows because they can't stand temptation. The problem is that *criminals* are casing houses. Let's keep the criminals locked up, and maybe everyone else can keep a window or two open on a hot night.

a2.com is not interested in your safety! I put a perfectly legitimate link to a wireless motion detector with an audible alarm (about 120 db ) only to have it removed. Just look for it and you can find them for under $20.

I think they were there to perform home repairs for free.

Locks on doors and windows around Ann Arbor are a lot like turn signals on cars, and since nobody ever uses them let's quit installing them and save lots of money.

"Bush said all of the weekend's break-ins occurred through unlocked windows or doors." Sounds like there is a pretty obvious solution to many/most of these home invasions.

Too bad this incident took place in a student housing area of town. Any other location would also be bad.

Sounds like Mr. Kinsey needs to write ANOTHER piece for the incoming students about locking their valuables up....
