EMU issues crime alert after shooting near campus
Eastern Michigan University issued an alert shortly before 8 p.m. Friday about a reported shooting on Jarvis and Lowell streets, near campus.
The alert urged people to avoid the area while police investigate.
Follow-up alerts said the suspect is a black male, wearing a white baggy shirt, blue jeans, red baseball cap and has a scraggly beard and pierced ears. The alert said a suspect has been identified by Ypsilanti police but remains at large.
No further details were available, Central Dispatch said no officers were available to provide additional information.
EMU Acting Police Chief Bob Heighes said he didn't have any more information than what was included in the alert sent out to students, faculty and others. He said the alert was issued because the incident occurred near campus.
Jarvis and Lowell streets are on the eastern edge of the EMU campus.
According to EMU spokesman Geoff Larcom, the shooting occurred across from the Alexander music building.

The news story in the eastern echo was much more thorough. Written by students and posted sooner. I realize they are more local, but you are supposed to be more professional.

Local 4 Detroit reported that at least two people were shot near EMU's campus. They were not students.

That is way too close to home. And that would explain all the sirens I heard around 8pm .

I do not like the idea that he could be running around in my backyard. I hope they find him soon! I'll feel much safer.

" a shooting".... was a person shot? did a gun merely discharge? Why even bother "reporting" this.....

Friends of mine were in the area and called me to see if I knew what was going on. Yes I think this is worth reporting.
