EMU student held at gunpoint in her apartment by acquaintance

By Kyle Feldscher

An Eastern Michigan University student told police she was held at gunpoint by an acquaintance at her on-campus apartment, then driven around in a yellow Ford Escape and dropped back off at her apartment Tuesday morning.

According to police, the woman was at her Westview Apartments home at about 4 a.m. when the man pointed the gun at her and took her out of the home and into the Escape. The man continued to point the gun at her as he drove her around, according to police.

The woman said she was later dropped off at her apartment and the man drove away in the Escape, police said. Police did not report any injuries related to the incident.

Police said Darnell Dwayne Garris is believed to be the man involved in the incident. Garris is not an EMU student and was believed to be driving toward Detroit after dropping the student off, according to police.

Garris is described as black, with a dark complexion, 6-feet tall, 150 pounds, black hair and brown eyes, according to police.

Anyone with information on Garris’ whereabouts or the incident in general is encouraged to call the EMU Police Department at 734-487-1222.

How scary for her! I'm glad she wasn't physically injured. With that said though, there seems to be a lot missing from this story (not blaming you Mr. Feldscher). It seems unlikely that someone would just do this randomly.

Sincere sympathy for this female victim. To be held for an extended period in fear of her safety and her life is truly frightening. It's very good to know this victim survived and is unharmed. To the perpetrator: Now you've done it. The lawmen are coming for you and now you are the one who deserves to live in dread.

A timely warning was sent out to EMU students and staff this morning. That is how AnnArbor.com would know about this incident in such quick fashion.
