A missed kick during a fight on the sidewalk outside La Pita Fresh on East Liberty Street in Ann Arbor Saturday night resulted in up to $3,000 in damage, the store’s owner said Monday.

Owner Kasey Chammout said a witness, who happened to be a customer on Monday, told him that two people were fighting outside the store on Saturday night. One of the combatants attempted to kick the other, missed, and hit the window instead, he said.

The store has filed a police report and the area has been boarded up for the time being. Chammout said a company is coming in on Tuesday to take measurements for a replacement pane of glass.

He said he’s not sure who the people who were fighting are. They ran away from the store, at 529 E. Liberty St., immediately after the incident, the witness said.

The broken window had printing on it with the store’s name and neon lights behind it, Chammout said. Replacing the windowpane along with all of the printing and the neon lights will cost somewhere between $2,500 and $3,000, he said.

The Ann Arbor Police Department is investigating the incident, Chammout said.

The "combatants" fled immediately following the fight, yet three police cars and an ambulance stuck around for about 45 minutes. As a delivery driver, that made for some interesting late-night back-ups, and late orders.

We depend on the tireless vigilance of annarbor.com to keep us in high dudgeon, yet there have only been three crime stories posted in the past 72 hours. Are there no more panhandling bums? No more suspicious cars cruising down subdivision streets? No abused parrots? Wake up, annarbor.com. We know we need to do something about THEM, and we're counting on you to tell us who they are.

Oh my, quite a miss-kick! Apparently the suspect didn't hurt himself, or wouldn't haven't gotten away so quickly. Hopefully they will both be caught and pay the price for repairs.

Sounds like Marshal Raylan Givens is needed over there in Arbor-tucky.

We'd be "Justified" in bringing in the Federal Marshals for this case!

This is what you get when you have a large group of people hanging around downtown but little police presence. Not saying people don't have the right to go downtown and walk around aimlessly, but recent articles about pan-handlers downtown included a picture of La Pita Fresh with a sign outside saying the tables were for their patrons use. So obviously La Pita Fresh acknowledge there were loiterers. People tend to loiter less when cops make rounds.

Atticus it's not about a police state, it is however about the climate downtown with a reduced police force. MIke is right, who pays for the window? well we all do eventually, but the immediate cost is great to the store owner/property owner. I am sure business insurance will cover most of it depending on thier deductible and policy, etc. have you been downtown lately in the evening? even around dinner time. Lots of people walking or biking to where they want to go but there is also a lot of people loitering. Not say waiting for friends to meet up to then go somewhere. Just loitering, for hours and hours.

Sounds good Atticus, but who should pay for the window?

People are going to fight anywhere there are bars...It's human nature. Here's a thought... instead of living in a police state, walk the other way and let the 2 meatheads duke it out.

Finding it somewhat ironic that, as I read this particular post, an ad for the 'Ann Arbor College of Martial Arts and Fitness' was featured on the side of the page... ;^)
