$8,000 in bad checks to Ann Arbor jewelers leads to criminal charges
The Grass Lake woman accused of writing bad checks at three jewelry stores in Washtenaw County attempted to pay for more than $8,000 in merchandise at two Ann Arbor locations, police said.

Jayme Schaffer, 32, is charged with two counts of writing a no account check in Ann Arbor, along with one count of writing a check with non-sufficient funds from a Saline case. They’re three of the cases Schaffer faces, along with charges in seven other counties, according to details released in the case by Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush.
Bush said Schaffer went to Lewis Jewelers, 2000 W. Stadium Blvd, on Sept. 12 and was helped by staff members at the store. Bush said Schaffer purchased an unknown amount of bracelets and wrote a check for more than $3,000.
Bush said the store reported to police on the afternoon of Nov. 3 that the check was written to an account that was closed.
On Nov. 18, Schaffer went to Schlanderer and Sons, 208 S. Main St., and was helped by staff members, who showed her some jewelry. Schaffer purchased more than $5,000 in jewelry before leaving the store, Bush said.
Staff from the store reported to police on Dec. 1 that the check had come back as written to an account that was closed, Bush said.
Schaffer was arrested by Saline police in November for a purchase she made on Aug. 18 at Accent Jewelers in Saline, according to police. In that incident, the owner of the store showed her several pieces of jewelry and she purchased a necklace and ring. She wrote a check for $1,547.60 and there was not enough money in her account to cover the cost, leading the store’s owner to alert authorities, according to police.
The investigation into Schaffer’s activities continued until her arrest one day after she went to Schlanderer and Sons in Ann Arbor. She was arrested in Calhoun County on Nov. 19 and she was transferred to Saline to be lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail, according to the Saline police report.
Schaffer is scheduled to be in court for a preliminary exam at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 26, according to court records.

Bracelets, like apples, can be counted, and therefore have a number, not an amount. Applesauce has an amount because it cannot be counted. "Unknown number of bracelets" is correct.

i can't believe the business didn't call the bank and check if the account had the funds. anytime a stranger comes in and spends that amount of money you always call the bank. if they get mad they probably don't have the funds. i own a business and anything over the norm gets a call to the bank.

When ordinary people write checks with no money, they go to jail. When politicians spend money they don't have, they call it "raising the debt ceiling."
