Intruders kick down door to Ypsilanti Township home while 90-year-old resident was sleeping

By Amalie Nash

A 90-year-old homeowner was awoken early today when two intruders kicked down the door of his Ypsilanti Township home to steal electronics, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department.

The break-in occurred at about 1:20 a.m. in the 500 block of Olds Street in the West Willow neighborhood.

Police say the men kicked down the door, took a 37-inch flat screen TV and were rummaging through the dresser drawers when the 90-year-old homeowner woke up. The intruders fled through the back door and ran south through the backyards behind the homes, reports said.

Deputies searched the area, but were unable to locate the men, reports said.

The resident was unharmed. He was unable to provide a description of the intruders other than to say they were men and one was wearing a stocking cap with a brim.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Arts at 734-971-8400, ext. 67232 or e-mail at artsj@ewashtenaw.org.

@ RJA Since I think personal safety is a personal responsibility and have advocated so, I have to say I similarly object to my tax dollars subsidizing or funding alarms for anyone especially when said alarms as a general panacea to crime certainly is questionable. You want government to fix the crime problem? Fine, look to Kennesaw, GA for a simple, inexpensive and historically effective solution. Didn't cost the taxpayers much either. In the meantime the most effective personal solution to this is relatively inexpensive and there are a plethora of stories similar to this that ended much better for it.

Oh my, where is it safe to live any where now-a-days? Wouldn't it be great if Medicare paid for alarm systems to be put in the homes of the elderly over 70 and live alone? To many people know who live alone, and who don't.

It is just not safe for elderly people to remain in their homes after dark anymore. They should be moved to a location that is secure. We don't want anyone to get hurt.

Where is the outrage from the community, I remember a recent article where there was quite the debate about police response to an out of control party in the area. I find it interesting that all the "community activists" will scream and shout about police response times, but when things of this nature are going on in their community there is no response. A 90 year old woman is incapable of feeling safe in this neighborhood because it is overrun with criminals and criminal sympathizers. I hope the victim is able to relocate to a neighborhood where this type of activity isn't tolerated by its residents. P.S. I'm sure the West Willow residents will find a way to blame the police department or some other entity that keeps them from turning the blame to where it soley belongs, the blame for this act should rest with the two suspects who committed this heinous act and the community that embraces this sort of criminal behavior.

@ stevek: Amazing how the crime wave seems to have spread, almost to the point where I would say it is on the rise! Such a shame that things like this happen in such a nice neighborhood.
