Man accused of driving drunk after hitting 3 parked cars, 2 light poles and fleeing

By Kyle Feldscher

A 19-year-old Brownstown Township man was arrested and hospitalized after crashing his car into three parked vehicles and two light poles while allegedly driving drunk in Ann Arbor Thursday night, police said.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said Friday police were called at 11:48 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report of a hit and run crash near William Street and Maynard Street. Bush said the man was driving a pickup truck south on Maynard Street when it went off the road to the right, striking a light pole and a parked vehicle.

Rather than turn back onto the road, the man then drove across the corner of the sidewalk and headed west on William. Bush said the man drove across William Street toward Cottage Inn Pizza, hitting a parked car with such force it ended up with its rear wheels on the hood of the car behind it.

The man then swerved back across the road into the northbound lanes and struck another light pole, Bush said. At this point, the man decided to ditch the pickup truck and fled the area on foot.

A short time later, officers with the University of Michigan police arrested the man at Washington Street and Fifth Avenue, Bush said. He was turned over to the Ann Arbor police.

The man suffered minor injuries, so no sobriety tests were done. He was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital for a blood test and to be treated for his injuries.

There is no excuse for this bullCRAP happening. It is simply, drugs, drink and drive. DDD

What I'd like to know is, who supplied alcohol to this kid in the first place? there need to be consequences for whoever did this.

You are suggesting that alcohol was a main factor in this crime.

I think I saw the residue from this today. You didn't mention the trashed bicycle and the bent-over bicycle stand.

Let's all welcome the youngster from Brownsville to AA: http://www.hvai.org/aa_meetingsearch.html Great town to get drunk, wreck three cars and learn to get sober.

When I drove regularly in that area 22 years ago, Maynard was a one-way street in which you could only drive NORTH. I'm guessing it's a two-way street today.

It's scary to think of someone getting behind the wheel in this condition. Even scarier to me is he probably wasn't drinking alone, others saw the shape he was in and let him drive anyway. I'm no angel, I've gotten behind the wheel when I shouldn't have but thankfully never like this.

Maybe it was a Toyota. TOP GEAR BBC (the REAL one) tried to kill a Toyota pick up truck and just couldn't do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnWKz7Cthkk

djacks24, Hope he wasn't driving a F-150 pickup; I've seen ads for F-150s saying they're the pickups for people who aren't afraid of hard work.

Maybe one of the major truck manufacturers could use this as an example of how tough their trucks are? Any video out there?

a22...I got it..but perhaps we should set up a time to talk to this child, ask his feelings, and understand he didn't mean to do anything, empower him by building his self-esteem and award him a trophy for just showing up... ;o]

a2citizen, this "child" is old enough to know what he was doing. nobody forced his mouth open, stuck the neck of the bottle between his teeth and forced him to drink. speaking of which, whoever furnished this underage drinker with alcohol should face the consequences also(see:contributing to the delinquency of a minor).

It will be interesting to see what the blood tests reveal re:his blood/alcohol. He would probably be facing charges for hit and run I would hope. So much damage done. Lucky no one was killed. Again, I wonder if his friends watched him stagger out to get on the street with the rest of us.

I don't understand the votes on these comments. Pot does impair driving...so does alcohol...it's irresponsible to use any drug that effects your brain so much before driving.

I've also known drunk drivers who have used parking garages, it's pretty easy to navigate before the bar, but less so after...

Yeah but don't forget the gang of thugs that were beating the guy with their belts in the parking structure a few months back.
